Why I Pour My Heart Into Blogging

Welcome back to our “Let’s Talk” series, where we dive into topics spanning far beyond just culinary creations. As I hinted previously, this space is for anything and everything that sparks reflection, connects us, and perhaps offers a glimpse behind the scenes. If you’re primarily here for tantalizing recipes and expert kitchen tips, you might consider checking back on Monday for a truly exceptional dessert bar recipe that promises to be out of this world. However, if you’re curious about the journey, the heart, and the soul behind this food blog, then settle in, because this post is for you.

For those of you who remain, including my dear family members and loyal readers, this particular “Let’s Talk” entry gets quite personal. Honestly, I often wish we could gather here in my kitchen, perhaps around the island, sharing stories and laughter. Those candid conversations are what keep me grounded, centered, and full of joy, making this online space feel like a true community.

The Evolving Landscape of a Food Blog: More Than Just Recipes

Lately, I’ve spent considerable time reflecting on the fundamental reasons why I continue to blog. While my personal motivations might seem insignificant to others, they profoundly shape the aesthetic, tone, and overall experience of this culinary website. Ultimately, these underlying reasons impact every one of us who connects through this platform. So, yes, let’s acknowledge their collective importance.

Eight years ago, when I embarked on this blogging adventure, the notion of still actively blogging in 2015 was entirely absent from my mind. It simply wasn’t part of the plan. I never anticipated that this humble food blog would begin to receive comments from an ever-growing readership across the internet, or that it would transition from a simple blogspot URL to its own dedicated domain at www.melskitchencafe.com. The idea of evolving from a mere 10 pageviews a month (again, a shout-out to my supportive mom!) to exceeding 2 million monthly pageviews was beyond my wildest dreams. And, in retrospect, I can’t help but chuckle at how truly nascent my photography skills were back then, despite my sincere belief at the time that I was a budding food stylist. Oh, the journey!

None of these future milestones were even on my radar. My initial desire was straightforward: to create delicious food and share the successful outcomes on a genuine, live food blog. This seemed a much more considerate approach than consistently inundating my family members with endless food posts on our private family blog (which, on a side note, I often wonder if I’m the last person on the planet still maintaining a family blog. Just curious!).

Navigating Life’s Journey Alongside Blogging

On a deeply personal level, this food blog has been an unexpected constant through significant life experiences. It has witnessed four major family moves – from the scenic landscapes of Utah to Wisconsin, then Minnesota, and finally settling in Idaho. It accompanied the arrival of two precious new babies, carried me through a challenging bout with cancer and the subsequent radiation treatments, and stood by during two major health-related surgeries, not to mention countless other personal ups and downs. Through every twist and turn, this little corner of the internet, dedicated to delicious recipes and culinary exploration, has grown, morphed, and transformed far beyond anything I could have ever imagined over the past almost decade.

When I first launched into the world of online food content, only a handful of food blogs were widely recognized. At that time, simply uttering the word “blog” often led to confused stares, as if you were speaking in a foreign tongue or perhaps even swearing! Fast forward to today, and the landscape is entirely different. We now exist in an era of thousands upon thousands of food blogs, with new ones sprouting up daily, each bringing its unique flavor to the digital culinary scene.

My timing in entering the food blogging arena proved incredibly fortunate, and for that, I am profoundly grateful every single day. I genuinely believe this early start played a significant role in the blog’s growth and reach, though the emergence of new social media platforms certainly didn’t hurt either. However, with this growth have come new complexities and challenges, compelling me to pause and earnestly re-evaluate the core reasons that drive me to continue blogging.

The Evolution from Hobby to Heartfelt Commitment

What began as a pure hobby, a place where I posted whenever inspiration struck, giving literally no thought to anything beyond selecting the next (often questionable) photo to accompany a recipe, has blossomed into something that demands a substantial investment of my time. We’re talking many, many hours each week.

On average, I dedicate about 40-50 hours of work to my blog weekly. While this is entirely a choice – no one is compelling me to do it – there are certainly moments when it feels overwhelming. As many of you know, I manage a sizable and bustling family, which includes not just my children but also a cat, a dog, two cows, and eleven chickens, if that adds anything to the picture of controlled chaos!

These precious faces are, and always will remain, my absolute first priority. I strive diligently to minimize the time-consuming computer and social media tasks during my children’s waking hours. Given that I don’t work outside the home and several of them aren’t yet in full-time school (and of course, during the summer, all their sweet souls are home!), this means that, whenever possible, blogging responsibilities are strategically relegated to afternoon nap times – when I can encourage my older boys to engage in quiet activities while the younger ones rest – and after bedtime. This often means I stay up far too late, burning the midnight oil. However, they do get ample hands-on opportunities to help in the kitchen, a topic we’ve discussed before, as all the cooking and baking for the blog are thankfully done during reasonable daylight hours.

Beyond the Plate: The Intricate World of Blog Management

Blogging, as it turns out, encompasses far more than simply sharing recipes. It involves navigating the occasional malfunction of website functions, diligently keeping up with the ever-evolving demands of social media (a subject for another lengthy discussion entirely!), managing hosting fees, and investing substantial resources into continuous development, design updates, and technical fixes. It means hiring an assistant – my wonderful sister, who is truly exceptional! – to help manage the hundreds of comments and emails that require responses daily, to oversee the aforementioned social media tools, and to tackle numerous other projects. It’s experiencing the incredible highs of truly positive, encouraging comments and enduring the occasional lows of mean-spirited negativity.

And sometimes, dear readers, I admit, I just want to stop. I fantasize about stepping away from blogging altogether and dedicating those 40-50 hours a week to simply reading novels. Or perhaps exercising more consistently. Or even sewing? I believe I once knew how to do that. Or wait… sleep. Oh, how I’d love to just sleep.

But every time I experience one of these minor crises of confidence – and my husband genuinely deserves a therapist’s salary for consistently talking me down from the ledge – I invariably return to the fundamental reason I started this blog in the first place.

A loving embrace between a man and a woman, standing close together, sharing a moment of affection.

To Share My Tried-and-True Favorite Recipes with the World.

I understand this might sound a bit cliché, perhaps even trite, but its truth resonates deeply within me. Every single time, this core mission recenters me and helps me realize that despite the myriad other elements that now contribute to this blog’s existence as it has grown, *that* – the pure joy of sharing delicious, proven recipes – is the unwavering reason I continue to blog.

Authenticity in the Age of Digital Culinary Content

Other food blogs will undoubtedly come and go. Many will surpass mine in terms of sheer numbers, social media followers, revenue generation, lucrative cookbook deals, and countless sponsorship opportunities – all the ancillary aspects that accompany modern blogging. And I won’t lie, the ambitious, perfectionist side of my personality sometimes struggles with these comparisons. However, every time I contemplate venturing down that path – finally saying yes to a major publisher, committing to work with more companies to promote their products, or burying myself in social media for endless “likes” – it doesn’t take long, often mere hours, before I find myself utterly miserable. It’s simply not who I am; it’s not how I genuinely blog. To the business-savvy, eagle-eyed minds, this approach might seem foolish and naive. I’ve heard from more than one fellow blogger, family member, and acquaintance that I’m “shooting myself in the foot” by blogging the way I do, by not capitalizing on more opportunities, and that I’ll “never get ahead.”

Is it wrong to admit that I am perfectly content with that? Everything I ever truly desired in blogging, and in fact, more than I ever truly wanted, I possess right now. Call it unmotivated, unambitious, or whatever label you choose. I call it staying authentically true to my roots and purpose.

The Power of Community and Unwavering Quality

I am incredibly fortunate to have loyal readers who are so dear to me; their impact is truly inexplicable. Your thoughtful comments, heartwarming stories, witty observations, and even the amazing recipes you sometimes send me, make all the endless work of blogging profoundly worthwhile. These genuine interactions effortlessly counteract any minor instances of negativity that occasionally surface.

And then, there’s the food itself. I adore food. More specifically, I love *truly good* food. I adhere to a strict personal rule: I will not post a recipe unless it absolutely rocks. You won’t find any filler recipes here, no content generated merely for the sake of having something new. My motivation for posting stems from a genuine desire to share. If I didn’t, I fear I would simply explode from having to keep such a ridiculously awesome recipe all to myself instead of sharing it with you all.

At the close of each day, just as it was eight years ago when this journey began, it ultimately remains about the food. But in an amazing, almost serendipitous way, it has also become profoundly about the people who gather here – you, my readers, who have collectively forged this space into a vibrant community. Perhaps it’s just me who feels this connection, but as awkward and socially unusual as it might sound, you represent a wonderfully bright spot in my daily life. Many of you have, in essence, become some of my dearest friends, even though I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting most of you in person. I genuinely look forward to hearing from each and every one of you.

Looking Ahead with Authenticity and Purpose

This isn’t to say that in the future, I won’t decide to pursue new opportunities that come my way, or that certain elements of my blog won’t evolve. In fact, there are some exciting developments currently in progress as I write this. However, these external aspects are not the primary drivers or motivators that compel me to continue this blogging journey.

Phew.

No, really, phew!

Thank you for allowing me this moment to get these thoughts off my chest. You truly deserve some form of reward if you’ve made it all the way to the end of this rather personal post. I typically strive to keep intensely personal, emotionally charged, and blog-specific reflections like this separate from my daily posts. This is primarily because I understand that most of you visit this site for exceptional food content, and I am absolutely fine with that. I cherish our shared love for great food and have no intention of constantly burdening you with all my feelings.

But I suppose today, I simply wanted to make it unequivocally clear, even though I hope you already sense it from being here day after day, that I deeply value sincerity and authenticity. These are the core principles I strive to convey through my blogging. I operate without ulterior motives. Sometimes, I don’t even know what tomorrow holds for this blog, let alone the next five years.

I just blog.

And I am incredibly happy that you are still here, sharing this culinary adventure with me.
