Navigating Life’s Journey: Insights on Wellness, Family, and Personal Growth

Welcome back to a special edition of my thoughts, where we dive beyond the kitchen and into the multifaceted journey of life. Today, I’m sharing honest reflections on personal wellness, family dynamics, and the constant pursuit of balance. From embracing new dental routines to transforming our fitness regimen and navigating the beautiful complexities of motherhood, this post offers a glimpse into the everyday experiences that shape us. Join me as I explore these different facets, hoping to inspire and connect with those also striving to live a more intentional and fulfilling life.

1. My Invisalign Journey: A Fresh Perspective on Eating Habits and Discipline

A few weeks ago, I embarked on an exciting, albeit slightly challenging, new chapter: adult orthodontics with Invisalign. I initially shared this update on Instagram, and the response highlighted how many of us consider or undergo similar transformations. My journey has been enlightening, revealing aspects of my daily habits I hadn’t truly noticed before. While the changes I needed were relatively minor, the process has been far from entirely seamless, involving some discomfort as my mouth adjusts to these removable aligners. It’s been a stark reminder of the importance of consistent dental care, prompting a “wish I’d worn my retainers as a teenager” moment more than once!

The core of the Invisalign experience revolves around constant removal and reinsertion. Every time I eat, the trays must come out. Post-meal, a meticulous routine follows: brushing and cleaning the aligners with warm, soapy water, followed by flossing and brushing my teeth before the trays go back in. This isn’t just a recommendation; it’s a crucial step to ensure hygiene and the effectiveness of the treatment. This rigorous protocol has had an unexpected, yet significant, impact on my eating habits. I’ve become remarkably more mindful about what and when I eat.

Perhaps it’s a touch of laziness (a highly probable assessment!), but I’ve realized that unless I am genuinely tempted or intensely hungry, the effort of removing, eating, and then meticulously cleaning isn’t always “worth it” for a casual snack. My days are now punctuated by the question: “Is this food truly worth the Invisalign removal ritual?” Surprisingly, even my beloved fudgy brownies don’t always make the cut anymore! The mere thought of the internal and external brushing and flossing required afterwards can sometimes be enough to deter me from an impulse treat. However, rest assured, when the aligners do come out for a proper meal or an irresistible indulgence, I make every moment count, savoring the experience! For those in the local area, I highly recommend Dr. Short at Clock Tower Orthodontics; he and his team are truly fantastic.

Beyond the momentary inconveniences, this journey is about investing in my long-term dental health and confidence. The pain, which has been more noticeable than anticipated, is a temporary discomfort for a lasting benefit. It’s a lesson in delayed gratification and consistent self-care, reinforcing habits that extend far beyond just dental hygiene. For anyone considering Invisalign, be prepared for a lifestyle adjustment, but know that the benefits of a healthier, straighter smile are a powerful motivator to push through the initial challenges.

2. Adapting My Fitness Journey: From Crossfit to BBG Stronger at Home

Last month, I offered a brief look into my exercise regimen, but life, as it often does, has brought about some significant changes. For all the everyday parents juggling work, family, and the constant quest for a sustainable exercise-life balance, here’s an update on where my fitness journey has taken me. My husband, Brian, and I made the decision to end our Crossfit membership. This wasn’t a snap decision; it stemmed from a variety of factors. Financial savings played a part, but a more pressing reason was Brian needing shoulder surgery, which put him out of Crossfit action for a while. Since we’re committed to exercising together for mutual motivation – truly, for accountability so neither of us sleeps through the alarm – ending our membership concurrently felt like the right step.

Since bidding farewell to Crossfit, I’ve transitioned exclusively to the BBG Stronger program. I access the workouts through the Sweat app, and so far, it has proven to be an invaluable investment. Brian, despite his injured shoulder and his disdain for working out in our low-ceilinged bonus room, has been doing it alongside me, modifying exercises as needed. His willingness, albeit slightly begrudgingly, is a testament to his commitment and, perhaps more importantly, his love for me! This shared commitment has been fundamental to maintaining our workout routine, even as we navigate changes.

I must admit, I love this program far more than I anticipated. Having seen BBG extensively hyped and promoted across social media, I was initially skeptical whether it could truly live up to the barrage of both paid and unpaid testimonials. However, I can genuinely say it’s pretty fantastic. The workouts are challenging, leaving me genuinely sore and sweating profusely, which, to me, signifies an effective session. I haven’t tried the original BBG program, having read criticisms about its perceived lack of weights. But BBG Stronger has certainly delivered on intensity and fulfillment, even if a “bikini body” remains an elusive dream (or perhaps an entirely different goal altogether, haha!).

One of the most welcome changes has been the slightly later wake-up call; I now start my day a full hour later than my Crossfit days – 5:30 a.m. – which feels like a luxury! My routine typically involves resistance workouts on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, complemented by a run, jog, or brisk walk on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Since many exercises are designed for gym equipment I don’t own, I’ve had to get creative with modifications, but it’s been surprisingly easy to adapt them for a home setting. My essential home gym equipment includes Brian’s adjustable dumbbells (though any set of dumbbells would suffice), a sturdy wood jump/step-up box, a versatile medicine ball, a moderately heavy kettlebell (for my strength level, I’m certainly no bodybuilder!), and a reliable exercise mat (all affiliate links). While BBG Stronger does require more equipment than some other at-home programs, I was fortunate to already possess most of these items in my designated exercise corner of the playroom, making the transition smooth. Our ceilings are too low for jump roping, so when that’s part of the workout, I simply substitute with graceful (or somewhat graceful, haha!) in-place hops.

Looking ahead, I confess I’m already feeling a slight pang of stress about what comes next once this 24-week program concludes. (Yes, I’m one of those individuals who pre-stresses about future logistical challenges!) Should I repeat the program? Or venture into something entirely new? I’m keen to avoid falling back into merely following random exercise videos, as I personally find they don’t sustain my motivation as effectively as structured programs. So, if any of you have fantastic recommendations for structured programs or apps similar to BBG that you’ve found effective, especially for at-home workouts, I would absolutely love to hear your suggestions!

3. Rediscovering Joy with Kids: Latch Hook Kits and Creative Play

In a serendipitous moment the other day, I stumbled upon a sale on latch hook kits at Hobby Lobby (the WonderArt brand) and decided to pick up a few on a whim. To my delight, several of my children are now completely “hooked” – pun absolutely intended! It’s often a challenge to find engaging crafts for boys that don’t involve a parade of purple unicorns or delicate butterflies, so I was thrilled to discover designs featuring a soccer ball, a charming dog, and a cool tie-dye pattern. This variety was a breath of fresh air, providing options that resonated with their interests.

I have such fond memories of creating these very projects all the time when I was a child. The nostalgia was strong, and I honestly had no idea they were still being manufactured. But they are! And, evidently, they are just as fun and captivating for kids today. These kits have proven to be a fantastic project for them to pull out and work on whenever boredom strikes. They offer a wonderful, screen-free alternative that encourages focus, fine motor skills, and patience – qualities that are invaluable in today’s fast-paced world. Watching them concentrate, meticulously pulling the yarn through the canvas, has been incredibly rewarding. It’s a quiet, calming activity that allows for creative expression without the pressure of perfection.

Beyond the immediate engagement, these projects offer a tangible sense of accomplishment once completed. They can proudly display their finished creations or even turn them into shaggy pillows, adding a personal touch to their rooms. I envision many more latch hook sessions in our future this summer, leading to an abundance of cozy, shaggy creations! It’s a simple reminder that sometimes the best entertainment comes from timeless, hands-on activities that foster creativity and provide a sense of quiet fulfillment. If you’re looking for engaging, non-electronic activities for your kids, especially those that cater to a broader range of interests, I highly recommend revisiting the classic latch hook kit.

4. Deep Reflections on Motherhood: Embracing Growth Amidst the Chaos

Lately, my mind has been profoundly occupied with the expansive landscape of life and, particularly, motherhood. The perennial questions circle: Am I doing enough? Am I truly present? Am I nurturing them adequately? I understand, intrinsically, that motherhood has the power to deplete you entirely – to suck you dry and, at times, break your heart if you allow it. What I’m increasingly realizing, however, is that this vulnerability isn’t always a negative force. In fact, it can be quite transformative. When I’ve reached my absolute lowest points as a mom, feeling utterly broken and emotionally spent, I’ve later been able to witness the miraculous power of the rebuilding process. Almost invariably, I emerge from these challenging phases stronger, more self-assured, and with a clearer vision of who I am and who I aspire to become, both as a woman and as a mother.

A thoughtful woman, possibly reflecting on motherhood.

A recent focus of mine has been learning how to thoughtfully disconnect from some of the overwhelming emotion inherent in parenting without, crucially, disconnecting from my children. This might sound counterintuitive, but let me clarify: I’m not suggesting that emotion is a detrimental component of parenting. Rather, I recognize a personal need to master its control, preventing it from consuming me and dictating my reactions. I’ve frequently observed myself becoming so emotionally enmeshed in specific situations with my kids, whether it’s with my spirited 5-year-old or my navigating-teenager 14-year-old, that I lose sight of the ultimate goal for that child – and for myself. While my intentions are undoubtedly good (I simply want to help them grow into functional, compassionate human beings, darn it!), I also acknowledge that my natural inclination to become emotional, my tendency to seek control, and my strong desire to teach (which, unfortunately, often translates into nagging) are not always the most effective strategies.

Therefore, I’m making a conscious and significant effort to maintain calm and positivity during inevitable power struggles and other difficult parenting scenarios. This is ongoing work, infused with a great deal of prayer and self-reflection. Brian and I are actively collaborating to establish clear, concise expectations, and to follow through with equally clear, concise consequences – whether positive affirmations or necessary corrective actions – ensuring that our emotions don’t hijack and control the situation. I’ve mentioned it before, but this concise and impactful book remains one of my absolute favorite parenting resources (affiliate link). I’ve found myself revisiting it time and again over the past year or so. While some of its examples might feel a little dated, its core principles are timeless and easily extrapolated to contemporary parenting challenges.

It’s incredibly challenging to allow children and, especially, teenagers, the space for independence and free agency or choice, even within the secure framework of structured family boundaries. It can be even harder to let them navigate and deal with the natural fallout, good or bad, from those choices. I find myself silently repeating a mantra at least 287 times a day: “You cannot control this, you cannot control this.” And then, quite honestly, I sometimes find myself hiding in the pantry, swiftly removing my Invisalign trays, and popping a handful of chocolate chips into my mouth – a small, personal moment of surrender and comfort amidst the beautiful chaos.

Yet, despite all the inevitable ups and downs, the moments of doubt, and the constant striving, motherhood unequivocally stands as one of the most profoundly rewarding and defining aspects of my life. It serves as my ultimate measuring stick for evaluating what else truly deserves my time and energy. The question, “How will this impact my role as a mom?” is my primary line of inquiry whenever anything new arises that demands my attention or commitment. Because deep in my heart, I truly believe that nothing else I am doing right now carries as much weight or significance as my divinely appointed assignment as a mother to my children. This perspective grounds me, centers my priorities, and continually reminds me of the profound love and purpose that permeate my daily life.
