- Ship Placement: Next, it’s time to deploy your fleet! Carefully write the letters representing all your ships onto your grid. You have complete freedom to place them wherever you desire, across any combination of squares, as long as the letters remain connected to form a ship. For example, if my “number one” calls resulted in a hit on Brian’s aircraft carrier and Jackson’s cruiser, they would each mark a ‘#1’ next to those specific ships in their tracking section.
- Hit Declarations: Going around the room one-by-one, each player will quickly declare whether they were hit in the current round. The exact phrasing should be concise, such as: “I was hit once (or twice, or however many times) on my ‘fill-in-the-blank’ ship.” It is vital that you DO NOT reveal the specific coordinates (e.g., Alpha 4 or Alpha 10) where your ship was hit. Only the ship type and the number of hits are declared.
- Collective Tracking: EVERYONE marks down ALL the hits on their own paper. This means if Brian announces he was hit once on his aircraft carrier, not only does HE mark it down under his name, but every other player also marks it down underneath Brian’s name in their tracking section. This collective record-keeping is incredibly important, as it allows players to start observing patterns on the main grid and deduce potential enemy ship locations.
I cannot emphasize this enough: It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to correctly write down the numbers that are called out each round on the top grid, and equally important to mark down every time someone declares their ships have been hit underneath their respective names. Accuracy in tracking is the cornerstone of strategy in this game.
Step #4: Continuing the Battle – Strategic Strikes
For round two, the next player in sequence, Brian, takes his turn to call out numbers. Assuming all his ships are still afloat, he also gets to call out five squares, this time marking them with a ‘#2’.
This round follows the identical pattern of calling out and marking as described in Step #2. Brian would announce his targets:
- Charlie 2 is a two
- Echo 7 is a two
- Foxtrot 2 is a two
- Foxtrot 7 is a two
- India 2 is a two
Observe Brian’s developing strategy here: He might be attempting to pinpoint the location of another one of Jackson’s cruiser ships. Notice how he placed two ‘number twos’ adjacent to spots that were hit in the first round. This indicates he’s hoping to “box in” or confirm the location of Jackson’s previously hit ship.
Again, every player marks down if any of their own ships were hit by a ‘number two’.
Then, following the sequence, everyone declares whether their ships were hit by any of the ‘number two’ calls, and just like before, EVERYONE marks down ALL these hits on their own paper, below the main grid, under the respective player’s name. Step #5: The Tide of Battle Turns – Sinking Ships
The third round progresses, with Jackson now calling out the ‘number threes’, and play continues in this manner, round after strategic round.
As the game unfolds, ships will inevitably take critical damage and be sunk. You can see in the example below, by the fifth round, both my cruiser and Jackson’s cruiser have been eliminated from the battle.
When a ship is sunk, the player whose ship was destroyed announces it during the hit declaration phase for that round. For example, after the fifth round, I would declare: “My cruiser was hit twice and sunk.”
All players would already have a record on their papers that my cruiser had been hit with a ‘number four’ in the previous round. Now, we would ALL mark the two ‘number fives’ under my name on my cruiser row, indicating its demise.
A sunk ship has a direct impact on future turns: it means that on my next turn to call out numbers, I would only get FOUR turns to call out the ‘number six’ (or whatever round we are on), because I now only have four active ships remaining. The same applies to Jackson; with his cruiser sunk, he also has only four ships in play.
Remember this crucial rule: You can only call out as many numbers on your “call out round” as you have active, unsunk ships remaining in play.
