Last autumn, I was granted the immense privilege of traveling to Utah to serve as the keynote speaker at the annual Mentors gala. Standing before such a distinguished audience, tasked with articulating the profound thoughts and emotions stirred by our journey, was an incredibly humbling and, I must admit, somewhat nerve-wracking experience. Like many dynamic non-profit organizations, Mentors International has experienced significant changes over the past year. It is with a heavy heart that I must share the news of the passing of Mark Peterson, their beloved CEO, a few months ago. Mark, who was instrumental in orchestrating my memorable trip to Ghana alongside DoTerra’s executives, bravely battled melanoma. He was an extraordinary leader and a visionary individual who guided Mentors for many years, diligently growing the organization and expanding its vital work into numerous developing nations. His unwavering dedication and compassion have left an enduring legacy, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him and were touched by his work.

In the wake of this profound loss, a new CEO, Ron Dunford, has recently been appointed. Brian and I are fortunate to know Ron personally, outside of our connection to Mentors International. If you recall, I introduced you to Naomi in last year’s post. Her story was one of immense struggle: a single mother, living with a physical disability, she faced repeated rejection for financing. Yet, through the invaluable support of the Mentors microloan program, Naomi was empowered to start a small business in her tiny village. When I first met Naomi in Ghana, she harbored a dream of opening a mobile banking kiosk in her village, a crucial service for rural communities. At the time, it seemed like an impossible aspiration.

But guess what? Through her hard work, strategic use of microloans, and unwavering determination, she has achieved that dream! Her mobile banking kiosk has not only become a reality but has quickly established itself as one of the most highly profitable ventures in her entire region. This success provides essential financial services to her community and generates significant income for Naomi.

The impact on her life has been profound. Naomi’s monthly income, which once hovered around a meager $17, has skyrocketed to an impressive $100 a month! This substantial increase has dramatically improved her family’s quality of life, providing access to better nutrition, education, and healthcare.

Furthermore, her business growth means she is now an employer, providing vital income for her daughter and two other individuals from her village. Over the past year, by strategically reinvesting her profits and leveraging subsequent loans from Mentors, Naomi has managed to double the inventory in her village store, which has, in turn, allowed her profits to triple. Her journey is a powerful testament to the entrepreneurial spirit fostered by microfinance.

Naomi recently conveyed a message to her loan officer, intended for all of you who have so generously supported Mentors International.
