1) Crafting the Perfect Family Vacation: Your Expert Advice Needed!
As a self-proclaimed homebody, venturing out for family vacations requires careful planning and a dash of courage. That’s why I desperately need your help! I’m on a quest to gather highly scientific data to present to Brian next week, and your experiences are crucial. What stands out as the absolute best family vacation you’ve ever embarked on? Where did you go, and more importantly, what made it so memorable and successful for your family? I’m looking for hidden gems, well-loved classics, and any unique tips that transformed your trip into an unforgettable experience. Your wisdom will be instrumental in convincing Brian (and myself!) to plan our next adventure, so thanks in advance for sharing your stories and recommendations!
2) Revolutionizing Meal Prep: Our Sunday Dinner Assignments Success Story
Last fall, a clear realization hit me: attempting to teach my children essential cooking skills during busy weeknights was simply not working. The evenings were a chaotic blend of too much activity, too much noise, endless distractions, and frankly, too much stress for everyone involved. And let’s be honest, my own controlling tendencies (ahem, taking full ownership for that one!) weren’t exactly fostering an environment of independent learning in the kitchen. It became evident that a change was desperately needed.

So, we decided to overhaul our approach, and I’m genuinely astonished by how incredibly well the new system is working. I absolutely adore it, and the kids are loving it too! To be perfectly honest, Brian and I have both been completely shocked by their burgeoning rock star cooking abilities. They’ve embraced this new challenge with an enthusiasm we hadn’t anticipated.
Introducing: Sunday Dinner Assignments
I’ve christened our new system “Sunday Dinner Assignments.” Pretty clever and catchy, right? I might just be a marketing wizard in disguise! The premise is simple yet remarkably effective:
- Menu Planning: Each week, I outline a straightforward menu for Sunday dinner. This typically includes a main dish, a homemade bread or roll component, one or two side dishes, and a dessert.
- Task Allocation: Using a sophisticated, high-tech system (a post-it note with each child’s name next to their assigned section!), I assign one of the children to each part of the meal.
- Recipe Choice: In most instances, I empower them to choose the specific recipe they want to prepare, within reasonable limits and always with my final approval. This fosters a sense of ownership and excitement.
- Independent Execution: Crucially, I purposefully remove myself from the cooking rotation. The children are responsible for executing their entire assigned dish, from prep to presentation. Furthermore, they are also accountable for washing all the dishes associated with their recipe – a vital life skill often overlooked.
- My Role: My primary function is to step back, avoid helicopter parenting, and only offer guidance when questions arise or direct help is explicitly requested. This encourages problem-solving and builds confidence.

Naturally, the process can be a bit chaotic and messy at times. They’re still learning to coordinate oven usage and stagger prep and cooking times so that the kitchen isn’t overrun with all of them at once. There have been spills (including an entire bucket of honey!), arguments over who gets to use the favorite whisk first (which sometimes ended in tears and at least one bruise), and yes, even a few instances where a dish was… shall we say… slightly inedible. But these moments, while challenging, have been incredibly valuable learning opportunities.

The most rewarding aspect is witnessing their beaming faces and palpable excitement as they eagerly tell Brian which dish they meticulously prepared when we finally sit down to dinner. Each of my boys has now successfully made homemade rolls (or this fantastic buttery bundt bread, a perennial favorite choice) at least twice completely by themselves. And let me tell you, if they accomplish nothing else in their lives, I will forever cling to the immense mom pride I feel over this particular achievement.

The system has now become second nature, with the boys regularly asking me on Saturday nights what their Sunday assignment will be. I fully expect our “Sunday Dinner Assignments” to evolve and undergo several variations over time, but for now, it’s operating beautifully. Of course, in the interest of full disclosure, about every fourth or fifth Sunday, I inevitably reach a point where I have a little “moment.” At these times, I declare that I simply cannot handle anyone else in the kitchen and unilaterally announce it “Mom’s Sunday Dinner Assignment All By Herself Please Leave the Kitchen Area Immediately.” And honestly, sometimes that’s just what’s needed for my sanity!
This leads me to a crucial question for you all: How do you effectively teach the children in your life to cook? Are you able to confidently let go of control and grant them the freedom to experiment and learn in the kitchen?
3) Celebrating Milestones: The Journey to Eagle Scout
A couple of Sundays ago marked a monumental achievement for our family: both Walker and Jackson earned their coveted Eagle Scout award, alongside three other remarkable young men from our church. Their journey through Scouting has been a truly enriching experience, even if there were moments they didn’t absolutely love every single minute of it. As a parent, I can attest that the paperwork process alone pushed the limits of our collective patience, and there were times I genuinely wondered if our family relationships would survive it! However, I am incredibly, genuinely proud of them for reaching this prestigious milestone. And, in a lighter vein, I’m also pretty proud of myself for successfully navigating through it all. Haha. But seriously, it was a significant undertaking for everyone involved.

During the ceremony, a particularly touching moment occurred when my 15-year-old, Jackson, chose to present his mentor pin to me. It was such a sweet and sentimental gesture. When the scoutmaster handed him the microphone to say a few words about his choice, Jackson cleared his throat and delivered a truly tender and memorable tribute: “Well,” he began meaningfully, “I’m giving this mentor pin to my mom because she basically threatened me that I couldn’t get my driver’s license until my Eagle Scout was done. And also, she drove me around to a lot of places.”

And you know what? I absolutely gave him a huge hug and a kiss on the cheek because I’LL TAKE IT! Both the heartfelt (and humorous) tribute and the mentor pin itself. 🙂 I love these boys dearly, and I am immensely proud of their hard work, dedication, and the perseverance they demonstrated throughout this demanding process. This journey also taught them invaluable life skills, including mastering the elusive art of making real, live phone calls – which, apparently, might just be the hardest, hardest, hardest thing one can ask a teenager to do!
4) The Elusive Quest for an Effective Natural Deodorant: Help Needed!
Okay, dear readers, I need to open up about a rather personal and, honestly, quite frustrating topic: natural deodorant. I apologize in advance for including perhaps too much information, but I’ve truly tried a lot of natural deodorants currently on the market. My extensive (and sometimes painful) experimentation has even come at the cost of experiencing some serious underarm chafing and uncomfortable rashes (yes, Schmidt’s, I’m looking directly at you!). I’ve dutifully tested brands like Lume, Tom’s, and Schmidt’s, following all the instructions, yet I consistently feel like I still smell like a pre-pubescent middle school boy after just a few hours. It’s incredibly disheartening!
So, I’m reaching out to you: Am I missing some crucial piece of information or a magical product? Is there truly a natural deodorant out there that genuinely works effectively and, equally important, doesn’t irritate or rip up my skin? Please, enlighten me and the rest of humanity who are struggling with this very common dilemma. Your tried-and-true recommendations and expert tips would be a godsend!
5) The Power of Completion: Finally Becoming a Finisher
Lately, I’ve been intensely focused on teaching my children the profound art of “being a finisher” – the satisfaction of seeing a task or project through to completion. Rather than resorting to lectures, I decided the most impactful approach would be to model the desired behavior myself. This meant finally tackling and completing a couple of significant projects that have been languishing for years.
The first was a crochet quilt, which I ambitiously started when Camryn was just a toddler. Yes, that means it’s been over five years in the making! I finally managed to finish it over the recent holiday break. I then wrapped it up and placed it under the Christmas tree as a well-deserved present to myself. I’m almost embarrassed to admit that actual tears welled up when it was finally done; it had truly been a labor of love. Now, I’m almost afraid to actually use it, terrified that it might unravel! (The free pattern is from Purl Soho, and the yarn came from Knitpicks – there was even enough yarn for my mom to make one of these blankets, which she, of course, finished years before mine. She’s definitely a rock star finisher!)

The second major project I finally completed was this intricate Fancy Forest quilt, based on a pattern by Elizabeth Hartman. A few years ago, when I first decided I wanted to learn how to quilt (having never done so before), I, perhaps foolishly, chose this incredibly ambitious pattern as my very first project. Go ahead and laugh; everyone in my real life certainly did! I fully admit it was a bit overzealous, but my logic was, “If I’m going to learn, I’m going to truly learn.” Well, you can see how that worked out. It took me, once again, approximately five years to finish this quilt. And there are so many visible mistakes that I can hardly bear to look at it closely. (Sidenote: I’m genuinely not sure quilting is the ideal hobby for someone with a brain wired quite like mine.)

Despite its imperfections, I finished it! This quilt is legitimately the hardest, most complex project I have ever undertaken in my life. And I am profoundly proud of myself for seeing it through. I even took a long-arm quilting class at a local quilt shop and, with trembling hands, long-arm quilted the top of this beast all by myself. I have never been more scared, yet simultaneously more proud, of anything I’ve accomplished in my entire life, ever. Also, I sweated an obscene amount during that long-arm process, which circles back to topic #4 above! But I promise to never talk about sweat again. This entire experience has reinforced the immense satisfaction that comes from finishing what you start, no matter how challenging or long it takes.
This experience leads me to ask you: Do you have any specific goals to finally finish something this year that you started a long, long time ago? Share your projects and your motivation!
6) Exploring the Plant-Based World: Vegan & Unprocessed Recipes
A dear friend of mine is currently undergoing a significant life transition, adopting a strictly plant-based, vegan, and no-sugar diet to actively combat a stage IV cancer diagnosis. Our conversations have largely revolved around the dietary aspects of this challenging journey, and my brain has been working overtime, exploring ways to support her (and also incorporate more delicious plant-based recipes into my own family’s meals!).
She and I have already embarked on numerous culinary experiments, testing various cashew-based dressings and sauces, among other creative dishes. We’ve certainly had our share of wins – discovering some truly fantastic flavors – and, of course, a few memorable losses in the kitchen. Haha! This journey has opened my eyes to the incredible versatility and health benefits of plant-based eating.

We are constantly seeking inspiration and proven recipes. Do you have any truly exceptional vegan or 100% unprocessed recipes that you would be willing to share? Are there any favorite online sources, blogs, or cookbooks that have become your go-to resources for plant-based culinary adventures? Your recommendations would be invaluable to both my friend and me!
7) Fostering Grit and Resilience: A Lifelong Lesson
I recently watched this fascinating TED Talk by Angela Lee Duckworth on ‘Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance’, and it deeply resonated with me. I wholeheartedly want my children to develop genuine grit – the unwavering capacity to persevere through challenges, to bounce back from setbacks, and to never give up on their goals. And let’s be honest, I aspire to cultivate more of that same resilience within myself!
I’m 1,000% certain that simply lecturing them about it does.not.help. Therefore, I’m actively seeking more effective, practical ways to help foster resilience and a growth mindset in my kids. This is a topic I feel passionately about, as these qualities are so crucial for navigating life’s inevitable difficulties. Are there any experts out there on growth mindset or practical strategies for building resilience in children? Have I delved too deeply into this topic for a casual Friday post? What are your thoughtful insights and experiences on cultivating grit in both children and adults?

8) Our Latest Board Game Obsessions: Fun for Two and More!
You know me – I can only go so long without excitedly talking about the latest board games that have captured our family’s attention! A huge shout-out to one of you awesome readers who recommended the game Patchwork – (affiliate link) on my holiday game gift guide. We absolutely adore it! This fantastic 2-player game is incredibly fun and engaging. You certainly don’t need to be interested in sewing, quilting, buttons, or any crafting to fall in love with it. It’s a game that combines super strategic thinking with just the right amount of luck, and I genuinely cannot recommend it highly enough for couples or any duo looking for a delightful challenge.
Another game that has become a staple for quick, lively game sessions is Left, Center, Right (LCR). We own both the basic version and the more dynamic wild version – (affiliate links). This game is incredibly fast-paced, super simple to learn, and universally fun for everyone around here. LCR consistently brings laughter and excitement to our table, making it perfect for all ages and group sizes.
