From Mall Walks to Marathons: Rachael’s Transformative Running Journey

My name is Rachael, and I am a 36-year-old mother blessed with four wonderful daughters. My personal running journey truly began five years ago, following the birth of my youngest child. However, it was last year that my commitment to running escalated from a casual pursuit to a profound, life-altering passion. For years, I had carried approximately 30 pounds of extra weight since having children, and despite numerous attempts, I had been largely unsuccessful in shedding it.

The turning point arrived early last year when a few friends invited me to join them for mall walking. Living in chilly Chicago, the idea of walking indoors was incredibly appealing and seemed like the perfect low-impact activity to get me moving. Yet, it wasn’t long before I realized I was capable of so much more than just leisurely strolls. This newfound awareness ignited a desire within me to return to the gym and seriously train for a 10K race. I had completed two 10Ks previously, but it had been several years, and I felt ready to embrace the challenge once more. I discovered an excellent training application, downloaded it, and meticulously began my preparation.

The Unbreakable Bond of Running Buddies

Just three weeks into my training regimen, a dear friend decided to join me, and from that moment on, we became inseparable training partners. We were, as I like to say, “joined-at-the-hip.” Together, we diligently trained, motivated each other through every step, and successfully completed two 10K races in June of last year. This period of intense training and shared accomplishment, however, was set against a backdrop of significant personal challenges for both of us.

In my case, May 2014 brought devastating news: my then 11-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s is a complex and often misunderstood chronic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the digestive tract. Its myriad negative side effects are debilitating, and managing it often requires potent and frightening medications to induce remission, as there is currently no cure. This diagnosis was a profound shock that reverberated through our entire family, ushering in an immense amount of stress, uncertainty, and emotional tumult into our lives.

Running as Sanctuary: Coping with Crohn’s Disease

In hindsight, I firmly believe that my ability to navigate the initial shock of my daughter’s diagnosis and the subsequent, often overwhelming, adjustments was directly linked to the established running routine I had already cultivated. The almost daily chat sessions with my friend as we ran became an invaluable therapeutic outlet. Running provided me with a crucial mechanism to release the immense stress I was carrying and, if only for a precious short amount of time, to shift my focus away from the fears and anxieties surrounding my daughter’s health. It also carved out a vital space for me to do something purely for myself, a necessary act of self-care amidst the chaos.

I am absolutely certain that had I not already developed this consistent running habit prior to my daughter’s diagnosis, I would have struggled immensely to find the motivation or capacity to engage in physical activity during such an emotionally taxing period. Running became my lifeline, a source of stability and strength when everything else felt uncertain.

The Half Marathon: A Test of Endurance and Resolve

After successfully completing our 10K races, my friend and I set our sights on an even greater challenge: a half marathon. Once again, we sought out a reliable training application, meticulously planned our schedule, and enthusiastically embarked on our new journey. We trained relentlessly throughout the entire summer, often meeting well before 6:00 AM to get our miles in before our husbands left for work. The commitment was immense, but the camaraderie and shared purpose made every early morning worth it.

I will forever cherish that summer of running. It wasn’t just about logging miles; it was about navigating one of the hardest trials of my life with a steadfast companion by my side and an empowering goal in front of me. The physical exertion and mental focus provided an essential anchor during a deeply challenging time, helping me process emotions and build resilience.

A Fall, Nine Stitches, and an Unforgettable Finish

In September, we proudly lined up for our very first half marathon. The race was progressing well, a true testament to our dedicated training, until mile 4. In an instant, I tripped and fell in a gravely, uneven section of the course. The impact was significant; my sunglasses lens popped out, causing a painful cut on my face, along with several other scrapes and wounds. The immediate pain and blood were alarming, and my friend, seeing the severity of the facial cut, was quite certain I would need stitches.

However, my determination to finish that race was absolute. I was not going to let an injury, even a visible one, derail months of hard work and commitment. We quickly conversed with the medical crew, managing to convince them to simply bandage me up so I could continue. With my face patched and my resolve firmer than ever, we pressed on. Crossing that finish line was an experience I’ll never forget. Despite the pain and the immediate need for medical attention, the overwhelming feeling was one of exhilaration and triumph.

True to my friend’s prediction, I went straight to the emergency room afterwards, where I received nine stitches on my face. Yet, in that moment, the physical discomfort and the need for stitches felt utterly insignificant. I was too elated, too proud of completing something I had once doubted I could ever achieve, to truly care about the superficial wounds. It was a profound accomplishment that solidified my belief in my own strength and capacity.

A Year of Unprecedented Achievements and Self-Discovery

Looking back at last year, my running achievements speak volumes about my transformation. I successfully completed one 5K race, two 10K races, a challenging 10-miler, and two half marathons. Each event was a milestone, a testament to growing strength and an unwavering spirit. And the journey doesn’t end there: my friend and I are now enthusiastically training for a full marathon, scheduled for April 2015! The progression from initial mall walks to a full marathon is a journey I never could have imagined, yet here I am, stronger and more determined than ever.

I am infinitely grateful for running. It truly saved my life last year, offering a vital outlet and a path forward during a period of immense personal strain. It has opened up a whole new world of possibilities and self-awareness for me. Through countless miles, I have discovered the remarkable capabilities of both my body and my mind. I’ve learned that I possess an innate strength, an ability to persevere, and the unwavering resolve to finish what I’ve started, no matter the obstacles.

Beyond the Scale: Holistic Benefits of Running

In addition to the profound emotional and mental benefits, running also facilitated a significant physical transformation: I successfully lost 30 pounds! What’s remarkable is how organically it happened. I barely even realized the weight was coming off, as my focus was so intensely on the training itself. As I grew stronger and fitter, the primary motivation for running shifted. It became less about the numbers on the scale and more about an intrinsic desire to push my own limits, to explore the depths of my endurance, and to truly understand what I was made of.

Running has undoubtedly become one of the greatest gifts in my life. The blessings I’ve experienced because of it – from newfound physical health and mental resilience to the cherished friendships and the deep sense of accomplishment – are countless. It has taught me about grit, self-compassion, and the incredible journey of continuous growth. It is a constant reminder that with dedication and a supportive community, we can truly overcome anything.
