The only minor downside we’ve encountered is that some of the small pieces can be easily lost, and replacements are hard to find. The only outdoor game to make our coveted list this year, Gater Jam (similar to other Disc Slam games) is currently my husband Brian’s absolute favorite yard game. This active and engaging outdoor game is perfect for 2-4 players, ages 8 and up, making it an excellent addition to family barbecues, beach trips, or just a casual afternoon in the backyard. We took it with us on our social distancing RV road trip this summer and play it frequently on Sunday evenings when the weather permits. The objective is to score points by throwing a flying disc and deflecting it into a “goal” (a portable cylinder). Teams work together to either directly throw the disc into the goal or deflect it with a partner’s help. There are many versions out there – we’ve tried the generic “Disc Slam” one, but found it flimsy and prone to falling apart. This Gater Jam version, however, has proven to be incredibly sturdy and reliable, and Brian even prefers it to the official KanJam brand. While we don’t typically use the scoring tab on the sides (it doesn’t work super well), the core gameplay is fantastic. It’s a wonderful way to encourage outdoor activity, teamwork, and friendly competition, making it an ideal holiday gift for active families and outdoor enthusiasts.

12. Mille Bornes

Mille Bornes is another fantastic card game that, while taking a little more time to learn initially, is incredibly rewarding and fun! Apparently, it’s quite a classic, though it was new to us this year.
