The Versatility of a Perfect Loaf: Serve it Your Way

One of the many charms of this Cinnamon Applesauce Bread is its incredible versatility when it comes to serving. Whether you prefer it still warm from the oven, with its spices blooming beautifully, or perfectly cooled to allow the flavors to meld even further, it’s always a delight. It tastes wonderful on the same day it’s baked, offering a fresh, vibrant flavor, and remains just as exquisite on the next day, perhaps even developing a deeper character. Slice it for breakfast, pack it for a snack, or enjoy it as a light dessert – this bread is ready whenever you are.

While this loaf is absolutely magnificent on its own – simple, pure, and utterly satisfying – there’s a certain magic that happens when you introduce a little something extra. A thin, glistening spread of butter transforms each slice from merely “great” to “absolutely amazing.” The rich creaminess of the butter complements the warm spices and tender crumb of the bread, creating a symphony of flavors and textures that is truly irresistible. Don’t be shy; feel free to spread a generous amount!

For those who aspire to achieve rock-star status in the kitchen, allow us to share a secret: elevate your serving game with homemade honey butter. It’s remarkably simple to prepare – just cream together softened butter with a drizzle of honey – but the results are phenomenal. The delicate sweetness of the honey intertwines with the existing warmth of the bread, adding another layer of complex flavor that will leave your guests (and you!) utterly captivated. Be warned, though: serve this with honey butter, and your friends might just extend their visit indefinitely. It’s that good!

From Beloved Banana Bread to Wholesome Applesauce Delight

The journey to perfecting this Whole Grain Cinnamon Applesauce Bread began with a serendipitous discovery. My dear virtual friend, Heather, shared this recipe, and after just a few easy whisks in the mixing bowl, a familiar sensation washed over me. I realized this recipe bore a striking resemblance to my all-time favorite and most-loved buttermilk banana bread recipe. This was a similarity I could identify from a mile away, as that banana bread recipe is so frequently made in my kitchen that its steps are practically etched into my memory forever (while some people get catchy songs stuck in their heads, I’m fortunate enough to have truly killer recipes on repeat in mine!).

Indeed, the fundamental lineup of ingredients is almost identical, with the key distinctions being a few nuanced spices and, of course, the delightful substitution of applesauce for the mashed bananas. This revelation immediately assured me that this applesauce variation was destined to be a winner. Its foundation on a tried-and-true formula promised success, and it certainly delivered!

I embarked on several rounds of testing and tweaking, refining the recipe to achieve its ultimate form. This involved subtle adjustments, such as slightly reducing the oil content for a lighter crumb, incorporating nutrient-rich whole wheat flour for added goodness, and specifying weight measurements for greater accuracy in baking. Even with these minor modifications, the exquisite deliciousness of the bread never wavered. This inherent flexibility is truly a hallmark of the best recipes, allowing for adaptations that cater to different preferences or dietary goals while consistently producing outstanding results. The adaptability of this bread means you can make it your own, ensuring it fits perfectly into your baking repertoire.

So, what are you waiting for? Dive into your kitchen, gather your ingredients, and make this incredible Whole Grain Cinnamon Applesauce Bread! Experience the joy of its tender crumb, its warm, spicy aroma, and its wholesome goodness. Fall in love with every bite, generously slather it with butter or that irresistible honey butter, and then come back and share your delightful baking story with me. I can’t wait to hear all about it!

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup oil, melted coconut, light olive oil, avocado, vegetable, melted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup (106 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (106 g) light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup buttermilk or sour cream
  • 1 cup (227 g) no-sugar added cinnamon applesauce (see note)
  • 1 ¾ cup (249 g) white whole wheat flour (see note)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan. For easy removal, you can optionally line the bottom with parchment paper, which helps prevent sticking.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the oil and eggs until they are thoroughly combined and smooth. Then, add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, buttermilk (or sour cream), and applesauce. Continue to mix until all ingredients are well-incorporated into a smooth batter.
  • Next, add the dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Stir gently until just combined. A few small lumps are perfectly acceptable and even desirable; avoid overmixing, as this can lead to a tough loaf. Think of it like a good muffin batter that’s mixed just enough to come together, but not obliterated.
  • Carefully pour the prepared batter into the greased (and optionally parchment-lined) 9×5-inch loaf pan. Use a spatula to spread the batter evenly across the pan.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45-60 minutes. Baking times can vary slightly depending on your specific oven, so start checking around the 45-minute mark. The bread is done when the top springs back lightly when touched, and a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out with moist crumbs attached, but no wet batter.
  • Once baked, let the loaf cool in the pan for about 5-10 minutes. This allows it to set slightly before you invert it onto a wire cooling rack to cool completely. Serve warm or at room temperature, ideally with a generous spread of butter or delicious honey butter (while it’s great plain, these additions truly enhance the experience!).

Notes

Applesauce: If you don’t have cinnamon applesauce on hand, plain applesauce will work beautifully. In that case, consider increasing the amount of ground cinnamon in the recipe by an extra ½ to 1 teaspoon to compensate for the missing flavor. Additionally, if your only option is sweetened applesauce, the recipe will still turn out well, but you might want to slightly reduce the amount of granulated or brown sugar to balance the overall sweetness.

Flour: This recipe was primarily developed using 100% white whole wheat flour, which provides a wholesome touch without making the bread too dense. However, it is also absolutely divine when made with all-purpose flour (I’ve certainly enjoyed it that way a time or two!). For those new to baking with whole wheat flour, or if you prefer a lighter texture, you might find a perfect balance by using a blend of 50% white whole wheat flour and 50% all-purpose flour. When measuring flour, especially whole wheat, it is crucial to use a light hand. Scooping too much flour can result in a dry and tough loaf. For the most accurate results, weighing your flour with a kitchen scale is highly recommended.
