Friday Reflections: Navigating Life’s Journey, One Thought at a Time

Hello, wonderful friends!

As the vibrant hues of autumn paint the landscape, I hope the season is treating you kindly. It’s that time again for our cherished Friday Thoughts check-in – a space where we connect, share, and reflect on the myriad facets of life. Today, we’re diving into everything from amusing internet memes to profound lessons in mental well-being.

These posts hold a special place in my heart, primarily because of the incredible insights and genuine connections that blossom in the comments section. Your contributions make this community truly special. You are, without a doubt, my favorite part of these weekly reflections.

1. Two Memes That Perfectly Capture My Current Parental Reality

A humorous meme featuring a perpetually tired koala bear, symbolizing overwhelming parental exhaustion.

Oh, that koala bear meme! It speaks volumes to the deep-seated, bone-weary exhaustion that often accompanies parenthood. Please, tell me I’m not the only parent who looks at that little sleepy koala and feels seen, understood, and a tiny bit less alone in the daily grind of raising tiny humans. The sheer amount of energy required to keep up with children, manage a household, and juggle all of life’s other demands can sometimes feel like an uphill battle fought on very little sleep.

And then there’s the permanently exhausted pigeon, an equally fitting visual for my current state. The reason I often feel like this perpetually weary bird is almost certainly linked to the delightful, albeit demanding, creatures featured in the very next item on today’s Friday Thoughts lineup. They are adorable, yes, but they also bring a whole new level of “busy” to our lives.

2. Piglet Pandemonium: Adorable Chaos on the Faux Farm

For those of you who follow my faux farm account on Instagram, you’ll already be familiar with the latest additions to our animal family. Our beloved Kunekune pig momma, Olivia, welcomed a litter of the most endearing piglets about two and a half weeks ago. And oh my goodness, they are truly the cutest, most captivating little creatures you could ever imagine. Their tiny snouts, wobbly legs, and playful antics are utterly enchanting. However, I must also confess that these bundles of joy are an enormous amount of work!

Three healthy Kunekune piglets resting comfortably in a bed of fresh straw.

The original, well-intentioned plan was to time Olivia’s litter for the summer, when the kids would be home from school and available to help with the extensive care required. But, as often happens with the “best laid plans,” they didn’t quite account for the pigs’ own leisurely pace in “getting the job done,” if you catch my drift. Nature, it turns out, operates on its own schedule.

Consequently, I’ve found myself largely responsible for the day-to-day care of these energetic piglets while the children are at school. And to say these little zoomie rascals are more than I bargained for would be a significant understatement. Each day brings new adventures and challenges, from ensuring they’re all feeding properly to simply keeping track of their boundless energy.

We tragically lost one of the piglets in the first few days due to a birth defect, which was heartbreaking. Another little one has struggled to thrive, so I’ve been constantly vigilant, trying every trick in the book to encourage her to eat and grow strong. Despite the challenges, these tiny beings are so incredibly adorable that, yes, I admit I spend a considerable amount of time simply sitting in the pig hut, mesmerized by their playful interactions. I honestly can’t tear myself away! It’s a true #pigsoverpeople situation sometimes.

Adding to the adventure, three of my children decided to invest their savings in the adult Kunekune pigs, with the hopeful goal of recouping their investment through the eventual sale of piglets. So, here we are, fully immersed in the world of pig farming! It has been an educational, exhilarating, and occasionally exhausting journey for the entire family.

For a daily dose of cuteness and to witness all the delightful antics from the past few weeks, I highly recommend checking out the PIGLETS highlights on my Instagram account. Be warned, though: piglet content, especially of the Kunekune variety, turns out to be highly addictive. You might find yourself scrolling for hours, completely captivated by their charm!

3. The Inspiring Journey of My Friend Maria: A Testament to Courage and Perseverance

Today, I want to share a truly remarkable story about an extraordinary individual who has profoundly touched my life: my friend, Maria. Her journey is one of immense courage, unwavering determination, and a quiet strength that inspires me deeply.

Earlier this year, my husband, Brian, came home from work with an unusual request. He asked if I still had the old reading lesson book I used when our children were first learning to read. When I inquired about its purpose, he explained that a kind woman he worked with, Maria, had approached him in his office. She was humbly seeking any resources or guidance that could help her, as she didn’t know how to read.

Brian painted a vivid picture of Maria: one of the most dedicated and hardworking employees at their plant. He shared that she had single-handedly raised five children, navigating life’s challenges with incredible resilience. He described her as intelligent, compassionate, unassuming, and someone who always puts others first. Her life, he emphasized, had been shaped by struggles and hardships that he and I could never fully comprehend.

Without hesitation, I retrieved my well-worn reading lesson book for Brian to take to work. In that moment, a powerful and undeniable desire to help Maria learn to read welled up within me, even though we were complete strangers. It felt like a calling, a privilege to assist someone so deserving.

After Brian graciously facilitated the arrangements at work, Maria and I began meeting every morning, four times a week, starting back in May. We embarked on our reading lessons together. Initially, I harbored some doubts about my ability to be an effective teacher, especially for an adult learner. Yet, it turns out that this rather old-fashioned, systematic phonics book proved just as effective in teaching adults to read as it had been for my own children!

Two women, Maria and the author, smiling with masks on, standing together in an office lobby, symbolizing their journey of learning and friendship.

But, of course, the primary reason for our success lies squarely with Maria’s incredible spirit. Her indomitable determination, her unyielding willingness to keep trying, even when faced with decades of being told she was “stupid” for not being able to read and that she would “never learn.” She persevered through immense societal stigma and personal challenges, proving every naysayer wrong.

Over the past five months, our lessons evolved into much more than just reading instruction. Each session would begin with us talking about life – family dynamics, daily stresses, food, teenagers, and everything in between. These conversations built a beautiful bridge of friendship and understanding, creating a safe and supportive environment. Eventually, and naturally, we would transition to the reading part of our time together. 😊

I find myself with legitimate tears in my eyes as I type this, because Maria has truly blossomed into such a dear friend and an profound source of inspiration for me. Her journey has gifted me with invaluable lessons.

She has taught me that it is genuinely never too late to acquire a new skill or bravely attempt something difficult, especially when learning to read in English as a second language, with Spanish being her native tongue. She has also shown me that it’s perfectly alright to cry, revealing a heart that is undoubtedly one of the kindest in the entire world.

Maria’s quiet resilience has taught me that in an era often characterized by fiery personalities, divisive opinions, and a constant scramble for recognition as “the best,” there exists a profound, steady power in working diligently every single day. She moves through a world that, for the most part, may never fully notice or outwardly reward her immense efforts, yet she continues with grace and unwavering dedication. This quiet strength, I’ve learned, is far more impactful than any fleeting acclaim.

And perhaps most significantly, she has instilled in me a deeper, more profound gratitude for the countless opportunities I’ve been afforded in life—opportunities I too often, and regrettably, take for granted.

I vividly remember the first day Maria read her first “real” word. It was ‘mat’. She paused, shook her head in disbelief, and with absolute awe in her voice, kept repeating, “Wow, wow, wow.” She simply couldn’t believe she was reading. (I was biting my lip so hard under my mask that day to prevent myself from openly weeping with joy!) Now, she’s confidently reading full stories complete with dialogue, intricate plots, and engaging characters. She recently told me that she feels as if an entire new world has opened up to her, now that she possesses the gift of literacy.

She just finished this inspiring book about the brave Clara Barton. But to me, Maria is the epitome of bravery. She has defied incredibly challenging circumstances that would undoubtedly spell devastation for most of us, navigating them with unwavering integrity, boundless kindness, and endless, tireless hard work. I am so incredibly grateful to have her in my life and to call her my friend.

4. Halloween: A Confirmed Scrooge (Mostly)

Are you a passionate Halloween lover or firmly entrenched in the hater camp?

I confess, I fall squarely into the latter. I’m sincerely sorry if this revelation comes as a shock, causes dismay, disappointment, or even horror among the Halloween enthusiasts out there. It’s not that I dislike all things spooky, but I simply struggle to find many redeemable qualities in this particular holiday. Consider me a Verified Halloween Scrooge, right down to my core.

My aversion extends to most of the holiday’s themes—the overtly creepy, the gory, and the general focus on fear just don’t resonate with me. However, I must admit there’s one significant exception that occasionally wins me over: sometimes, the food. Specifically, the adorably cutesy monster-themed cookies and other playfully spooky treats manage to crack my Scrooge-like exterior.

Some years, we embrace the fun by decorating these delightful little spooky houses, often from a convenient kit from Trader Joe’s or Costco, transforming them into haunted gingerbread abodes. And if I’m truly operating on my A-game, Halloween night might see us enjoying a festive dinner baked inside a pumpkin or these charmingly ghoulish mummy dogs and cookies. These culinary traditions are about as “Halloween” as I get!

What about you? Do you have any fun, family-friendly Halloween food traditions that bring joy without the fright? I’d love to hear them!

{P.S. Before anyone gets genuinely worried about my kids missing out, rest assured, they absolutely go trick-or-treating! However, the process of finding a costume around here is, shall we say, very much a “create-your-own” type of charmingly chaotic situation rather than store-bought perfection.}

5. The Great Crocs Debate: A Confession and a Call for Honesty

Someone recently told me that you can decipher a surprisingly significant amount about a person simply by observing whether or not they choose to wear Crocs in public. It struck me as a rather specific, yet oddly intriguing, gauge of personality and comfort. So, now, the burning question that has been on my mind, one I absolutely have to know: Do you?

I do. And I admit it, entirely unashamedly. For years, my kids have sported Crocs with various charms, and while I acknowledged their presence, I never really held a strong personal opinion about them. They were simply footwear for the children. Then, earlier this year, a pivotal moment arrived when my kids, for Mother’s Day, thoughtfully gifted me a pair.

And. Well. The rest, as they say, is history. I now wear them constantly. Everywhere. To the grocery store, running errands, in the garden, even sometimes for a quick dash out. Their practicality and unparalleled comfort have won me over entirely, transforming me into an unexpected Crocs convert. I sincerely hope our friendship can withstand this rather personal revelation!

Now it’s your turn. Tell me your deepest, darkest, and most honest thoughts about Crocs. This is a completely judgment-free zone, a safe space for all opinions, whether you’re a devoted fan, a staunch opponent, or somewhere amusingly in between. Let’s hear it!

6. Believe It or Not: My Second Son Turns Sweet Sixteen!

It feels utterly surreal to type this, but my second son is celebrating his sixteenth birthday just one week from today. Many of you loyal readers have been with us on this journey since he was a mere four-year-old. The passage of time truly feels “insane in the membrane!” It’s hard to reconcile the little boy with the young man he has become.

Two side-by-side pictures of a boy, one showing him as a happy toddler and the other as a confident, smiling teenager, illustrating his growth.

He has gracefully (and sometimes comically) evolved into a hilarious, witty, remarkably smart, and genuinely hard-working young man. His sense of humor is a constant source of joy, and his quick wit keeps us all on our toes. He’s also developed a rather unique pastime: secretly taking selfies on my phone during church while I’m painstakingly playing my way through the hymns on the organ. It’s moments like these that perfectly capture his mischievous yet endearing spirit.

I have a few exciting ideas up my sleeve for his upcoming birthday celebration, but I simply cannot type them out here. Why the secrecy? Because I know, from the regular comments left on my blog, that he and his friends often sneak a peek at my posts, frequently during math class (ahem, BOYS, get back to work and focus on those equations!). The element of surprise must be preserved at all costs!

In the spirit of celebrating this milestone, please share any of your fantastic sweet sixteen birthday ideas below! I’d love to gather some fresh inspiration from your collective wisdom.

7. Catching Up & Navigating Life’s Unseen Struggles: A Candid Reflection

Catching Up from Our Last Friday Thoughts Post:

  • A massive thank you for all the incredible planner recommendations! I genuinely spent countless hours researching different options for next year, poring over your suggestions. While I haven’t quite settled on the perfect one yet, you absolutely provided some phenomenal ideas that have narrowed down my search significantly. You truly are the best community! (Some of the most frequently recommended brands included Passion Planners, Emily Ley planners, Golden Coil, Planner Pads, Erin Condren, In the Leafy Treetops, various bullet journals/planners, Plum Paper, Jordan Page productivity planners, and several other innovative systems!)
  • Also, following hundreds of your enthusiastic suggestions, Brian and I finally started watching “Crash Landing on You” on Netflix! My boys didn’t stick around for long, but Brian and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s wonderfully quirky, genuinely funny, and refreshingly unique. We highly recommend it for anyone looking for a captivating and heartwarming escape!

I don’t often delve deeply into my personal struggles on this platform, as I typically strive to keep things positive and uplifting. However, I want to be open and acknowledge that for me, 2021 has been an exceptionally challenging year. I know, without a doubt, that I am not alone in this sentiment. The past couple of years have been incredibly difficult for the entire world, impacting lives in ways we could never have foreseen. For me personally, 2021 has been a relentless succession of difficulties, profound stresses, unexpected challenges, and moments of heartache that have truly rocked my foundation on multiple, deeply personal levels.

I’ve drafted and deleted these next few paragraphs countless times, because my intention is absolutely not to seek attention or pity. Primarily, I want to frankly acknowledge that online platforms and social media posts, while often inspiring, can do an exceptionally good job of masking the raw realities of real life and the profound challenges we all face. But I feel it is profoundly important to recognize and articulate that life, and crucially, mental health, rarely fit neatly into a tidy, pretty little box. They are often messy, unpredictable, and complex.

If you, like me, have experienced a particularly hard year (or even several difficult years), please know, deeply, that you are not alone in your struggles. I am slowly, but stubbornly, learning and accepting that it is profoundly okay to admit when I’m not okay. This realization, this acceptance, represents a monumental step forward for me, a significant personal victory. And after the rather awkward and disheartening experience of being ghosted by a therapist earlier this year, I am finally brave enough (I think!) to try again. My goal is to find the right support to help me sort through the chaos in my brain and, crucially, to bolster some of my rather puny coping skills.

Thank you for being here, for reading, and for being part of this community. I say that often, but I genuinely, truly mean it from the bottom of my heart. I am immensely grateful for all of you who allow me to be very, very human, to share my vulnerabilities, even when society often seems to champion and reward unsustainable and misleading ideals of perfection. I am so incredibly grateful that YOU are real, beautifully imperfect, and compassionate, too.

Love your guts, always.
