A Friday Medley of Celebrations Questions and Treasures

As the year draws to a close, we often find ourselves caught in a whirlwind of festivities, to-do lists, and cherished traditions. While these moments can be incredibly busy, they also offer a precious opportunity for reflection and connection. Today, I invite you to pause with me for a few moments, to celebrate a significant milestone, share some holiday musings, and discover a few new favorite things that might just make your season a little brighter.

Eighteen Years Strong: Celebrating a Culinary Journey and Community

It feels like just yesterday I was hesitantly hitting “publish” on my very first recipe, yet here we are, celebrating an incredible journey. This week marks a truly special occasion: my beloved blog, Mel’s Kitchen Cafe, officially turns 18!

Eighteen years. It’s a number that feels both astonishing and deeply humbling. For nearly two decades, this space has been a labor of love, a creative outlet, and, most importantly, a vibrant community. I often find myself repeating this, but my gratitude for each and every one of you, my incredible readers, knows no bounds. Your unwavering support, your thoughtful comments, and your shared enthusiasm for good food are the very reasons I continue to pour my heart into sharing my most cherished recipes. In my humble opinion, and I truly believe it, this truly is the best little corner of the internet.

What began as a simple, free hobby blog on blogspot.com – raise your hand if you remember the early mykitchencafe.blogspot.com days! 👋🏼 – has blossomed into something far beyond my wildest dreams. The transformation has been profound, touching every aspect of this digital home:

  • From One Recipe to Thousands: My very first recipe graced these digital pages in December 2007. Today, our recipe collection boasts nearly 2,000 unique dishes, ranging from comforting classics to exciting new flavors, all tested and perfected in my kitchen to bring joy to yours.
  • From Family Readers to a Global Audience: In those initial days, my primary readership consisted of my mom and sister. Now, I am incredibly moved to share that over a million people visit this site each month, seeking inspiration, trusted recipes, and a dash of kitchen camaraderie.
  • From Aspiring Author to Published Success: I never dared to dream that I would publish a cookbook, let alone that it would find its way into so many homes. Today, I proudly have a published cookbook that has sold tens of thousands of copies, a testament to the power of shared passion.
  • From Young Family to Growing Children: When that first recipe went live, I was a busy mom juggling three little ones, all aged three and under. Fast forward eighteen years, and my household is now filled with five wonderful children, aged 21 down to 13, navigating their own paths to adulthood.
  • From Wisconsin to Idaho and Beyond: My culinary journey began in Wisconsin. Since then, life has taken my family and me through Minnesota and Utah, before finally settling into our current home in Idaho. This geographical evolution mirrors the continuous growth and change that has defined the blog.

A Visual Journey Through Time: Then and Now

Ready for a heartwarming, and perhaps slightly amusing, trip down memory lane with a few *then* and *now* pictures?

(You guys, I actually remember thinking the close-up angle on that lasagna from 2007 was so photographically powerful. Oh, how times have changed! 🫣🫣)

It’s truly hard to believe my children think it’s perfectly acceptable to grow up and eventually leave me! 😭 I know eighteen years is a substantial amount of time, but seeing the remarkable evolution of my kids during the lifespan of this blog tugs at my heartstrings in the most profound way. It’s a powerful reminder of how much life has unfolded right here, alongside every shared recipe and personal update.

And now, a moment of silent reflection, or perhaps a chuckle, for some of the early logo variations my blog sported before I finally started generating a little revenue and could afford to hire a professional designer. It’s a journey, folks! 🤣

Considering all this, I think it’s only right that we start planning a magnificent celebration for Mel’s Kitchen Cafe’s 20th birthday in 2027. What do you say? Imagine us all crammed into my kitchen, chatting over warm cookies and mugs of hot chocolate, perhaps in our coziest messy buns and joggers?

Yes, that sounds like my perfect kind of celebration. Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey, friends. My life, and this blog, are immeasurably better with you in it. 💗💗

Navigating the Holiday Whirlwind: Your Seasonal Check-in

Beyond the celebrations, this time of year often brings a flurry of activity. I’m curious to hear how you’re all managing amidst the holiday rush. Let’s take a quick pulse check:

  • How are you holding up with everything on your plate?
  • Has your holiday shopping been completed, or are you still on the hunt for those perfect gifts?
  • Do you have exciting travel plans for the upcoming holidays, or are you embracing the comfort of staying home?
  • Most importantly, are you finding meaningful ways to truly enjoy this season, beyond the endless tasks and inevitable craziness?

That last question is a constant, guiding goal for me during the holidays – to seek out joy and presence amidst the bustle. It’s a challenge, but a worthwhile one.

Our Family’s Festive Strategies and Traditions

My current holiday status: I’m pleased to report that a significant portion of my shopping is done, and many packages have already been sent off to dear family and friends living far away. However, there are still a few charming stocking-stuffer-type items to be acquired, and, of course, nothing is wrapped yet – that delightful task awaits!

This year, with only two of my children still at home (😢), I made a conscious effort to simplify. I asked them which holiday traditions they genuinely wanted to continue and which they felt indifferent about. My intention was to thoughtfully eliminate any activities we were doing purely out of traditional obligation, creating space for what truly matters. It was incredibly enlightening! Surprisingly, they both still enthusiastically wanted to decorate gingerbread. This year, we’re opting for the convenient Costco gingerbread kit rather than laboring over homemade gingerbread, and I feel absolutely *really* good about that pragmatic decision.

(Here’s a fun flashback from about 10 years ago to give you a glimpse into just how seriously we used to take our homemade gingerbread creations around here! The dedication was real 😜🤣)

Of course, it wouldn’t be the holidays without making a bazillion cheeseballs to share with our wonderful neighbors and friends. Last year, feeling utterly exhausted, we opted for an easy, non-food gift, and let me tell you, many people expressed their genuine displeasure, even texting to inquire when the beloved cheeseballs would be making their grand return! 😜 Lesson learned: some traditions are simply non-negotiable.

This week, we’re also planning a special outing to visit the inspiring Light the World Giving Machines, a beautiful way to give back to the community. Afterwards, we’ll take a leisurely stroll through the enchanting light display at a fun city center nearby, soaking in the festive atmosphere.

Curated Comforts for the Season: My Latest Favorite Finds

I know I’ve already shared my comprehensive gift guides for the holiday season, packed with ideas for everyone on your list. However, as I navigate my own life and daily routines, I’ve stumbled upon a few additional treasures that I’ve been absolutely loving right now, and I couldn’t wait to share them with you!

  • A Game-Changer for Puzzle Enthusiasts: With my persistent aging neck and back issues, discovering this fantastic tilting puzzle board has been nothing short of revolutionary. My mom had a similar version when we visited for Thanksgiving, and I immediately ordered one for myself! It has made puzzling so much more comfortable and enjoyable. We’ve already completed this beautiful puzzle on it, and the experience was truly perfect, allowing for extended periods of focused fun without discomfort.
  • Unleash the Fun: More Game Recommendations!
    • Our family absolutely adores trivia games, and this general knowledge trivia set is an absolute blast! It’s perfect for family game nights or gathering with friends. What’s even better is that there are many different sets available with various themes, so you can always find something new to challenge yourselves with.
    • This game was an undeniable hit at our Thanksgiving gathering! Seriously, it was so popular that I’m gifting it to several families this year. It’s a brilliant cross between the strategic elements of Phase 10 and the tile-matching fun of Rummikub, but with its own unique and engaging rules. We’ve been playing it non-stop since.
  • The Ingenious Flat Whisk: A Space-Saving, Non-Scratch Solution: This flat whisk, which cleverly twists and expands into a full-sized whisk, is a marvel of brilliant design. Its primary benefit is saving valuable space in a crowded utensil drawer, but I’ve grown to love it even more because it absolutely does not scratch my precious nonstick pans. While it might not be quite as sturdy as my heavy-duty wire whisks, it’s absolutely perfect for thinner batters, gravies, and mixing lighter ingredients, offering versatility whether used flat or fully expanded.
  • My New Fiber Powerhouse: Basil Seeds! In my never-ending quest to ensure I get enough daily fiber (it truly feels like a full-time job sometimes!), I was diligently consuming chia seeds in my morning smoothies or yogurt. Recently, I made an exciting discovery and replaced my daily chia seed intake with these incredible basil seeds. Have you heard of them? They boast nearly double the fiber content of chia seeds and, even better, they rehydrate MUCH faster. A crucial note: despite the name, they don’t taste like basil at all! I typically mix them into my smoothies or yogurt. Once rehydrated, they develop a fascinating, robust texture, strikingly similar to the delightful tapioca pearls found in tapioca pudding.
  • The Bar Shampoo Revolution: Thicker, Healthier Hair! My sister has been passionately extolling the virtues of bar shampoo for months, and I finally decided to give it a try. Wow, what an incredible difference it has made for my aging and somewhat thinning hair! I’ve been consistently using this particular bar shampoo and the coordinating conditioner, and I am genuinely impressed by how much thicker and noticeably less brittle my hair feels. I often feel like I’m late to the game on new trends, and I truly wish I had discovered and started using this sooner!
  • The Viral Jeans That Live Up to the Hype: I know these jeans have been making serious rounds on social media, so I felt compelled to order them myself and thoroughly test if they truly lived up to all the buzz, especially considering their more reasonable price point. And the verdict? Yep, I can enthusiastically confirm: they absolutely do! I now own them in three different lengths and three versatile colors. They have quickly become practically the only jeans I wear these days – they are incredibly comfortable, and while wonderfully stretchy, they miraculously don’t lose their shape or become sloppy throughout the day. They are available in four distinct lengths to suit various preferences. For reference, I am 5’4″ (with a shorter torso and slightly longer legs), and I find the 30″ length in Seaside blue hits perfectly right below my ankles. I also love the 32″ length in Frosted Blue and classic Black, which are just fantastic with chunky boots, offering both style and ultimate comfort.

A Quick Last Note: Connecting Beyond the Recipes

If you’re subscribed to my email list, you might have noticed a subtle shift over the last few months: I’ve started including a few more short, personal life updates and notes in those emails. These snippets are intentionally placed at the very end of the emails, ensuring that readers who are primarily here for the delicious food (a completely valid and welcomed preference!) aren’t bothered by them.

I genuinely cherish feeling connected to all of you and staying updated on what’s happening in your lives. These little updates in the emails also create a wonderful opportunity for me to hear back from you directly – simply hit reply on those emails, and your response comes straight to me! It’s a fantastic way to foster that two-way connection.

Because I’ve been including more of these personal notes in my emails (and frequently sharing glimpses of daily life on Instagram), these “Friday Thoughts” posts have started to feel a bit redundant at times. This is partly why I’ve been publishing them less frequently. Over the next few months, I’ll be exploring and refining a new rhythm to determine the best way, and the right amount, to share these personal connections while keeping the blog fresh and engaging. Your feedback is invaluable in this process, so if you have any thoughts or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to leave them below in the comments! ⬇️⬇️

Looking ahead, I have one more brand new recipe scheduled to go live next Monday. I think I’m more excited about this particular recipe than any other I’ve posted this month – it is wildly yummy and truly a must-try!

After that, I’m planning to take a little much-needed time off from publishing new recipes. My goal is to truly soak up some quality time with my family during the holidays. However, rest assured, I’ll be back the week after Christmas with a fabulous new appetizer recipe to kick off the new year, along with a special look back at the most popular recipes of this past year! (And naturally, I’ll still be diligently checking emails and answering all your recipe questions in the comments section throughout my break.)

I want to extend my warmest wishes to you and yours for the merriest of holiday seasons. It is a profound privilege of mine to teach the children at church songs each Sunday. Over the last few weeks, as I’ve listened to their sweet, pure voices sing of Jesus Christ’s birth and offer praises for the abundant gifts He so freely gives us, I have felt His love with a clarity and intensity that is deeply moving. I am eternally grateful, now and always, for the unparalleled gift of His birth, His life, and His resurrection. May His boundless love and lasting peace find a special place in your heart this holiday season and beyond. ❤️
