My journey with these extraordinary cookies began during a summer visit to Montana. My sister-in-law, Erin, baked a batch for us, and they were so profoundly good that our hands couldn’t stop reaching for them. She even made them two days in a row to satisfy our insatiable cravings! I knew then and there that my blog simply wouldn’t be complete without a recipe like this gracing its pages. The moment I tasted them, I was convinced this was a game-changer.

Since that memorable trip, I’ve baked these cookies at least four or five times myself, including a massive undertaking of making and serving 150 of them for my cousin’s wedding dinner just a few weeks ago. Every single time, they’ve been an absolute hit. They’ve effortlessly rocketed to the top of my favorite cookie list, and for good reason. Just look at them in the photos—the sheer “wow factor” is undeniable! They boast an abundance of delicious inclusions, promising a unique experience with every single bite. The blend of textures and flavors is truly unparalleled, making them perfect for any occasion, from casual snacking to elegant gatherings.

The Unexpected Origin of “Kitchen Sink” Cookies: A Humorous Tale

The term “kitchen sink cookies” often conjures images of a chaotic mix of ingredients, a cookie so loaded it contains “everything but the kitchen sink.” But for me, the phrase carries a slightly more literal—and humorous—memory from my childhood. When I was about ten years old, living in Houston, Texas, my mom had a church responsibility to check in on the young missionaries in our area. One day, she visited their rather sparsely furnished apartment, which, true to form for young men, often needed a good cleaning.

During her visit, the missionaries proudly announced they had baked cookies and sent them off to their families. My mom, knowing their limited kitchen supplies, was quite surprised. She politely inquired about the type of cookies they made (chocolate chip) and, more importantly, what they had used for mixing. Unabashed, they revealed their ingenious, albeit unconventional, solution: lacking a large mixing bowl, they had used their kitchen sink to mix the dough! My slightly aghast mom probed further, discovering that no, the rather grimy kitchen sink had *not* been thoroughly scrubbed clean before this culinary endeavor. I still remember her coming home, brow furrowed, wondering aloud if she should somehow alert the unsuspecting families who might be receiving these literal “kitchen sink” cookies. To this day, the thought of those 1980s cookies gives me a bit of a gag reflex.

Even before baking, these cookies promise a bounty of flavors.

Rest assured, the peanut butter kitchen sink cookies I am sharing with you today bear no resemblance to that childhood tale. They are entirely metaphorical, celebrating the joy of combining a multitude of delicious ingredients into one spectacular treat. No actual kitchen sinks were used or harmed in the making of these cookies, I promise! They are 100% delicious, completely food-safe, and guaranteed to bring smiles, not raised eyebrows.

In fact, these cookies became so popular that I asked my wonderful community for name suggestions, and my 12-year-old lovingly compiled a list from hundreds of Instagram responses. Your creativity never ceases to amaze me! So many fantastic ideas came through, truly showcasing the spirit of these loaded cookies. It’s clear that the idea of a “kitchen sink” cookie resonates with many, inspiring fun and imaginative monikers.

Here are a few notable and clever favorites from the list:

  • G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) Cookies – a fitting tribute to their supreme deliciousness.
  • Whatcha-Mel-Callsit Cookies – a playful nod to the mystery of all the wonderful inclusions.
  • What You Find Under the Carseat Cookie – a slightly gross but undeniably funny and relatable name for a cookie with everything!
  • Spanx Busters – because these cookies are so good, you might just break free from your diet!
  • Pantry Cleanout or Pantry Raid Cookie – perfectly describing how these utilize all your favorite bits and bobs.
  • Pretzel Monster Cookies – highlighting the salty crunch that makes them so addictive.
  • Mary Poppins Cookie – because, much like Mary Poppins, these cookies are “Practically Perfect in Every Way!”

Crafting Your Masterpiece: The Peanut Butter Kitchen Sink Cookie Dough

Despite the “bazillion extra ingredients,” these peanut butter kitchen sink cookies are surprisingly straightforward to prepare. They aren’t any more difficult to whip up than your average, everyday drop cookie. The magic truly lies in the delightful combination of flavors and textures, all starting with a superb peanut butter cookie dough base.

The process begins by creaming together softened butter, creamy peanut butter (I find Skippy or Jiffy work best for consistency and flavor), granulated sugar, and brown sugar. This creates a wonderfully rich and sweet foundation. Baking powder, baking soda, and salt are then added to ensure the cookies are perfectly leavened and seasoned. Once these wet and dry ingredients are thoroughly combined and beautifully creamy, eggs and vanilla extract are mixed in for moisture and depth of flavor. The key here is to mix until everything is well-incorporated, resulting in a smooth, inviting dough.

Next, the flour is added and mixed just until it’s barely incorporated. This step is crucial to avoid overworking the dough, which can lead to tough cookies. Once the flour is mostly combined, it’s time for the “kitchen sink” additions! These glorious extras are folded in with a wooden spoon or spatula, or very slowly with an electric mixer, until they are evenly distributed throughout the dough. This method ensures that the dough remains tender and the mix-ins are perfectly integrated, guaranteeing a burst of flavor and texture in every bite. The sheer volume of delicious morsels makes these cookies an adventure in every mouthful.

Unleash Your Creativity: Customizing Your Kitchen Sink Cookies

The beauty of a “kitchen sink” cookie lies in its versatility. While my recipe provides a fantastic starting point, it’s truly an invitation to play with flavors and textures. The possibilities for customization are nearly endless, allowing you to create a cookie that’s uniquely yours. Don’t be afraid to experiment and discover your favorite combinations!

Here’s what goes into my ultimate Peanut Butter Kitchen Sink Cookies:

  • Toasted Pecans: I’ll admit, I’m usually not one for nuts in my cookies, but in these, toasted pecans are absolutely essential. Toasting them brings out their deep, buttery flavor and adds a satisfying crunch that beautifully complements the other textures. Don’t skip this step!
  • Peanut Butter Chips: These intensify the rich peanut butter flavor of the cookie base, creating an extra layer of nutty deliciousness.
  • Chocolate Chips: A classic for a reason. Semi-sweet chocolate chips provide a familiar and comforting sweetness that balances the salty elements.
  • Caramel Balls: I specifically use the Kraft brand of unwrapped caramel bits, which are similar in size to large chocolate chips and melt beautifully. If you can’t find these, simply unwrap soft Kraft or Trader Joe’s caramels and cut them into smaller pieces with a bench knife or a sharp, oiled knife. It’s a bit of a labor of love, but the pockets of gooey, buttery caramel they create are absolutely and completely worth the effort.
  • M&M’s: These add a delightful candy crunch, vibrant color, and an extra layer of chocolatey sweetness. I’ve successfully used regular M&M’s, dark chocolate M&M’s, and even caramel M&M’s for an additional twist.

The powerful mixer effortlessly combines all the delightful ingredients.

Beyond my favorites, I encourage you to play with the add-ins to your heart’s content. What about incorporating some of these ideas?

  • Other Chopped Candy Bars: The sky is truly the limit here! Think Snickers, Twix, Heath bars, or even butterfinger bits for different flavor and texture profiles.
  • Pretzels INSIDE the Dough: While I prefer pressing them on the outside for maximum crunch, incorporating some crushed pretzels directly into the dough would add a subtler salty element throughout.
  • Other Types of Chopped Nuts: If pecans aren’t your favorite, try walnuts, almonds, or even cashews for a different nutty note. Ensure they are toasted for the best flavor.
  • Coconut: Shredded coconut would add a tropical sweetness and a delightful chewy texture.
  • White Chocolate Chips: For an extra layer of sweetness and a different kind of chocolate experience.
  • Potato Chips: For the ultimate sweet and salty crunch, crushed potato chips can be a surprisingly delicious addition.
  • Marshmallows: Mini marshmallows would melt into gooey pockets, adding a unique texture.
  • Toffee Bits: For a buttery, crunchy, and slightly caramelized element.

When selecting your additions, consider balancing sweet, salty, and textural contrasts. A good kitchen sink cookie has a little bit of everything, making each bite an exciting surprise. The goal is to create a symphony of flavors that dance on your palate.

Forming and Baking for Perfection

Once your irresistible cookie dough is mixed, it’s time to transform it into delectable balls ready for baking. Due to the generous amount of add-ins, your dough balls won’t be perfectly spherical, and that’s perfectly fine! All those charming lumps and bumps are simply indicators of extra yumminess to come. Embrace the rustic charm!

For uniform cookies, I recommend using a #40 cookie scoop to portion out the dough. After scooping, gently roll the dough into a ball. Next, press the top of each cookie dough ball into coarsely chopped pretzels. Then, carefully turn the cookie over and lightly press the pretzels into the soft dough to ensure they adhere well during baking. Again, perfection isn’t the goal here; the uneven, spiked appearance adds to their homemade appeal. While you *could* eliminate the pretzels, they truly are a game-changer, adding that crucial salty crunch that is absolutely awesome. What’s more, they maintain their satisfying crispness and don’t become soft or soggy after baking, making them a non-negotiable for the ultimate kitchen sink experience.

Adding the signature pretzel crunch is a simple yet impactful step.

These cookies will spread during baking, much like other drop cookies, but likely not as much as a plain cookie, thanks to all the bulky add-ins. They are designed to be wonderfully super soft and retain a slight puffiness, creating a delightful contrast with the crunchy pretzels and other textured inclusions. Bake them for approximately 9-11 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the centers are just set.

For those who prefer a slightly flatter cookie, you can gently press the dough into more of a disc shape before baking, or try lowering the oven temperature to 325 degrees F. Conversely, if you find your cookies are spreading too much and becoming too thin, increasing the baking temperature to 375 degrees F can help them set faster and retain more height. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your oven and technique to achieve your ideal cookie texture. Every oven is a little different, and a slight adjustment can make all the difference in achieving your perfect batch.

Since these cookies have also affectionately been dubbed “clean out the pantry cookies” and “pantry raid cookies,” I am incredibly excited to hear about all the other creative variations you clever and adventurous bakers come up with! Please share your unique combinations; you never cease to amaze me with your culinary ingenuity.

Smart Storage: A Quick Note About Freezing

Should you miraculously find yourself with more cookies than your self-control can handle, or if you wisely decide to bake a large batch in advance, these peanut butter kitchen sink cookies freeze exceptionally well! Yes, even with the pretzels, they maintain their delightful texture upon thawing. This makes them a perfect treat to have on hand for unexpected guests, a quick dessert, or simply to satisfy a sudden craving.

To freeze, ensure the baked cookies have cooled completely to room temperature. Then, stack them in an airtight container, such as a large Tupperware, with sheets of wax paper or parchment paper in between layers to prevent sticking. When you’re ready to enjoy them, simply remove the desired number of cookies from the freezer several hours before serving and let them thaw at room temperature. They will taste as fresh and delicious as the day they were baked, offering that same irresistible soft, chewy, crunchy, sweet, salty, and caramelly goodness. After all this talk about these glorious peanut butter kitchen sink cookies, it looks like I’d better go grab a couple out of the freezer myself, just to remind my taste buds how truly divine they are!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (227 g) salted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (255 g) creamy peanut butter (I use Skippy or Jiffy)
  • 1 cup (212 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (212 g) packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups (355 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (170 g) chocolate chips (I use semisweet)
  • 1 cup (170 g) peanut butter chips
  • 1 cup (198 g) caramel balls (see note) or chopped soft caramels
  • 1 cup (198 g) M&Ms (regular, caramel, etc)
  • 1 cup (120 g) chopped, toasted pecans
  • 2 cups coarsely chopped pretzels

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 C) and line a couple baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or in a large bowl using a handheld electric mixer, mix together the butter, peanut butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well-combined and super creamy, about 2-3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to ensure even mixing.
  3. Add the eggs and vanilla extract, then mix well for 1-2 minutes until fully incorporated.
  4. Add the flour and mix briefly, just until the flour is partly combined. Then, add the chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, caramel, M&Ms, and pecans. Stir with a wooden spoon or spatula (or mix very slowly with the electric mixer on the lowest setting) until all the add-ins are evenly combined throughout the dough.
  5. Scoop out generous tablespoons of cookie dough (I use a #40 cookie scoop for consistent sizing) and roll them into balls. Due to all the glorious add-ins, these won’t be perfectly round, but embrace their charmingly rustic appearance. Press the top of each cookie ball firmly into the coarsely chopped pretzels (then lightly press the pretzels into the dough to help them stick). Place the cookie dough balls several inches apart on the prepared baking sheets to allow for spreading.
  6. Bake for 9-11 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the centers appear just set. These cookies are designed to stay fairly puffy, thanks to the abundance of add-ins. For a slightly flatter cookie, you can gently press them into more of a disc-shape before baking, or reduce the oven temperature slightly to 325 degrees F (160 C). Conversely, if you notice your cookies flattening too much, try increasing the baking temperature to 375 degrees F (190 C) for a shorter baking time.

Notes

Caramel: The caramel balls I refer to in this recipe are the unwrapped, soft caramel bits, typically about the size of large chocolate chips, sold by brands like Kraft (usually found in the baking aisle). If these are unavailable, you can unwrap soft caramels (such as Kraft or Trader Joe’s) and chop them into smaller pieces using a bench knife or a knife lightly greased with butter. It’s a bit of extra effort, but the gooey pockets of caramel in these cookies are absolutely worth it!
