Shelly’s Journey

A Mother’s Marathon: Running for Spina Bifida Awareness and Unwavering Hope

This is the inspiring journey of Shelly, a testament to resilience, the profound impact of friendship, and a mother’s boundless love. Her story intertwines personal challenge with a fierce dedication to advocacy, all fueled by the rhythmic pavement beneath her feet. From a casual runner to a seasoned marathoner, Shelly’s path became deeply intertwined with the quest to raise awareness and support for Spina Bifida, ignited by the life of her incredible daughter, Kaitlyn. We are privileged to share Shelly’s powerful narrative, an account of transforming grief into purpose and celebrating every milestone.

The Unexpected Spark: A Legacy Honored Through Running

My name is Shelly, I am 32 years old, I have three kids, and I started running two and a half years ago. My journey into running, however, began not with a personal fitness goal, but with a profound and unexpected loss. On my 30th birthday, in the summer of 2012, one of my close friends tragically passed away from bacterial meningitis. She was also 32, and like me, a loving mother to three young children. Her sudden departure sent shockwaves through our community and church family, leaving a deep sense of heartbreak.

My friend was, and continues to be, the type of person who inspired everyone she met. She approached life with incredible intentionality, embodying the roles of an amazing mother, devoted wife, and steadfast friend. Just months before her passing, she had accomplished a remarkable feat herself: completing a marathon that March. In her honor, a group of us decided to run a 10-mile race. I had never been a regular runner, only dabbling sporadically and always at a slow pace. But spurred by a collective desire to pay tribute to her vibrant spirit, some of us committed to becoming runners together. We were incredibly fortunate to have the unwavering support and guidance of a few accomplished friends, including one who had run competitively for her university. Their encouragement and expertise were invaluable, keeping us motivated and helping us reach our initial goal of running 10 miles. This shared experience transformed a group of novices into a supportive running community, bound by remembrance and a newfound passion for the sport.

From Personal Goal to Marathon Triumph

The successful completion of that 10-mile race ignited an unforeseen ambition within me. A new mantra formed in my mind: “If I can do 10 miles, I can do a half marathon. And if I can do a half marathon, I can do a full marathon.” This newfound belief swiftly translated into action, leading me to sign up for my very first full marathon, slated for just seven and a half months after I had started running seriously. The training regimen was intense, demanding unwavering commitment and discipline, often squeezed into the busy life of a mother of three.

Yet, through countless miles of shared training and the steadfast support of friends who ran alongside me, offering encouragement and pacing, I not only completed my maiden marathon but did so with an impressive finish time of 3 hours and 53 minutes. This achievement marked a significant personal victory, not just in terms of physical endurance but also in a transformative journey that saw me lose weight and feel invigorated. It proved to myself the extraordinary capabilities of the human spirit when fueled by determination and community support. The sense of accomplishment was immense, solidifying running as a permanent fixture in my life.

A Daughter’s Strength: The Journey with Spina Bifida

Having savored the immense satisfaction of my first marathon, I felt a powerful calling to leverage my newfound passion for a greater cause. The idea of running for charity immediately resonated, and one profound purpose instantly came to mind: raising money for The Spina Bifida Association. This choice was deeply personal, stemming from a pivotal moment in my life back in 2009. While pregnant with my third child, I received the life-altering news that she would be born with spina bifida. Spina bifida, the most common serious birth defect, profoundly impacts the brain, the nerves leading to the legs, and those controlling the bowel and bladder, presenting a wide range of challenges for affected individuals.

The diagnosis was a seismic shock, a moment where our “world crashed down around us,” and we felt the life we once knew was over. The future we had envisioned for our family seemed to crumble, replaced by overwhelming fear, uncertainty, and a sense of helplessness. In those dark moments, prayers for comfort, peace, and acceptance became our solace. However, a profound shift occurred when my heart softened, revealing a deeper truth: I needed to pray not for acceptance of a trial, but for gratitude for our precious daughter, a true child of God. With this shift in perspective, a powerful realization emerged: Kaitlyn was not a trial, but an incomparable blessing destined to enrich our lives in ways we couldn’t yet imagine.

At 24 weeks pregnant, a beacon of hope appeared in the form of a groundbreaking prenatal surgery. I qualified for a clinical trial known as the MOMS study. This innovative and complex procedure involved a C-section to access and surgically close the opening in Kaitlyn’s back. This opening had been exposing her spinal cord, causing ongoing damage to her brain, leg nerves, and bowel and bladder nerves. The goal was to mitigate further damage before birth, offering a chance for improved outcomes. Following the meticulous closure, both Kaitlyn and I were carefully closed up, and I continued my pregnancy—albeit with significant discomfort—for another ten crucial weeks, cherishing every moment and holding onto hope for our daughter’s future.

Kaitlyn’s Milestones and Unyielding Spirit

Kaitlyn Ava made her courageous entry into the world on September 23, 2009. Remarkably, the prenatal surgery performed through the MOMS study remains the only surgery she has ever undergone. Yet, her journey is one of continuous effort and determination. To manage her condition, Kaitlyn requires catheterization four times a day, a routine that demands discipline and precision. She diligently attends physical and occupational therapy every single week, a testament to her family’s commitment and her own incredible resilience in striving for greater independence and mobility. These consistent efforts culminated in a truly joyous milestone when Kaitlyn took her first independent steps at two years old, a moment of profound pride and emotional significance for our entire family.

Every accomplishment Kaitlyn achieves is the result of relentless hard work and an indomitable spirit. Witnessing her reach each new goal, from mastering new physical skills to navigating daily life with unwavering optimism, has been an incredibly fulfilling experience for her family. Because progress has never come easily or naturally for her, every new milestone, every small victory, fills us with immeasurable pride. Kaitlyn embodies the very definition of perseverance, inspiring everyone around her with her unwavering fight, cheerful disposition, and boundless capacity for joy, proving that challenges can be met with grace and strength.

Running for a Future: The “We Run For Kaitlyn” Movement

On March 1, 2014, I ran my second marathon, this time with a profound purpose: to honor my daughter, Kaitlyn. This wasn’t merely a solo endeavor; it blossomed into a powerful movement. A dedicated team of runners, united under the banner of “We Run For Kaitlyn,” participated in various race categories – the full marathon, half marathon, relay, and 5k – all proudly wearing custom blue shirts that proclaimed their mission. The sight of this flood of blue shirts throughout the race course was a stirring display of solidarity, a vibrant testament to collective support for Kaitlyn and for Spina Bifida awareness.

The impact of the “We Run For Kaitlyn” initiative extended far beyond the racecourse. Through a combination of dedicated team efforts, various community fundraisers, diligent shirt sales, and even charity prize money earned through our participation, the movement successfully raised an astounding $24,011 for The Spina Bifida Association. This remarkable achievement underscored the power of community, shared purpose, and the profound generosity of so many individuals. For me, running that marathon, surrounded by my team and knowing the significant funds raised, was an incredibly emotional and honoring experience—a heartfelt tribute to a daughter who, though she may never run a marathon herself, has already accomplished more in her young life than many could ever imagine. It was a moment of profound gratitude and pride.

Continuing the Legacy: Local Impact and Unwavering Commitment

The commitment to Kaitlyn and the Spina Bifida community remains a cornerstone of my life. In a testament to my enduring dedication, I prepared to run the same marathon for the third consecutive year on Saturday, February 28, 2015. For this particular effort, I decided to focus my fundraising locally, directing support towards the Spina Bifida of Houston Gulf Coast, the organization closest to our home and directly impacting our community. This localized approach aimed to strengthen resources and support systems within our immediate area, ensuring that funds directly benefited families like ours.

Even before the race, our fundraising efforts were proving remarkably successful, having already accumulated $3,625, with projections indicating almost $900 more would be raised through additional shirt sales. This continuous drive to give back highlights my unwavering resolve and the ongoing generosity of our community, who consistently show up to support this vital cause. Updates on our progress and ways to contribute were actively shared via our dedicated website: https://my.reason2race.com/runforkaitlyn2015. Each year, the campaign grows, creating a wider circle of awareness and support for Spina Bifida.

The Heart of a Runner: Inspiration and Lasting Impact

For me, running has transcended a mere hobby; it has become an indispensable part of my life. It is a source of profound physical and mental strength, a wellspring of cherished relationships forged on shared trails, and a constant affirmation of personal accomplishment. Beyond the immediate physical and social benefits, running offers a unique and powerful platform to honor my courageous daughter and channel efforts towards truly meaningful causes. Each stride I take is a step taken not just for myself, but for Kaitlyn and for the countless other individuals and families affected by Spina Bifida, amplifying their voices and their needs.

Through the lens of Kaitlyn’s extraordinary journey, I have gained an invaluable perspective on human potential and resilience. Watching Kaitlyn defy expectations and achieve feats once thought impossible—from taking her first steps to navigating daily challenges with unwavering optimism—has instilled in me the profound conviction that I, too, can overcome any challenge I face. Kaitlyn, with her indomitable spirit, infectious joy, and courageous approach to life, is undeniably my hero. She is a constant reminder of strength, resilience, and the boundless capacity for hope, driving me forward in every aspect of my life, both on and off the running path.

A Triumphant Update: The Third Marathon and Growing Support

In a thrilling update following my narrative, I am ecstatic to share that I successfully completed my third marathon just last Saturday! With the invaluable and unwavering support of my Boston-qualified friend, Dani, who ran every single one of the 26.2 miles alongside me, I achieved my sub-four-hour goal, finishing in an impressive 3:58:09. This personal best was secondary to the even greater triumph: our collective fundraising for The Spina Bifida Houston Gulf Coast reached an incredible $7,937. This outstanding effort not only provided crucial funds but also earned us the highly coveted third spot in the Charity Challenge, securing an additional $1,000 for SBHGC. This brought our total contribution to a phenomenal nearly $9,000!

The experience was nothing short of amazing, a powerful affirmation of our mission and the overwhelming generosity of our supporters and the broader community. Crossing that finish line, knowing the significant impact we had made, was incredibly humbling and deeply rewarding. I once again expressed my deep honor and privilege to “Run For Kaitlyn,” a testament to the enduring love for my daughter and the profound, transformative impact of our shared journey. Each marathon not only strengthens my personal resolve but exponentially amplifies awareness and vital funds for those living with Spina Bifida, paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future. This ongoing commitment is a reflection of the hope and strength Kaitlyn inspires every single day.
