Its core mechanic, with ever-shifting maze tiles, ensures that every game is a unique experience. Players strategically move wall pieces and their wizard tokens to reach treasures, teaching spatial reasoning and forward planning. It truly brings out the inner strategist in everyone, and while I like to think I’m decent, my kids frequently outsmart me!

AGES: 8+. Our 7-year-old is still getting the hang of this one, as it requires a bit more strategic foresight. I believe it’s best suited for kids aged 8 and up, and it’s also a fantastic game for just teens and adults to challenge each other.

10. Blink

Simple, fast, and happy – that’s how I’d describe Blink. This card game is designed for speed and quick visual recognition. Hahahaha, Exploding Kittens! Just the name makes me chuckle, that is, unless I’m deeply entrenched in a game with my kids, then it’s serious business – they need to know I’m playing to win! It’s a highly strategic, kitten-powered version of Russian roulette, where players draw cards until someone draws an Exploding Kitten and is out of the game unless they have a Defuse card. It’s also superb for the entire family. As I’ve probably repeated a hundred times, Cam (age 4, just in case you missed that memo!) isn’t quite ready for this one yet, but her brothers are already ensuring she’ll grow into it!

13. Jaipur

I originally bought Jaipur, a brilliant two-player game, for my parents (you know, empty nesters who need engaging activities!). They absolutely adore it! It’s a fast-paced, tactical card game where players compete to become the most successful trader in India by collecting and exchanging goods at the market, then selling them for rupees. The game moves quickly, offering strategic depth without the time commitment of a lengthy game like Risk. It’s perfect for couples or two friends looking for a quick yet deeply satisfying competitive experience.

AGES: 12+. While the box suggests 12+, I think you could stretch it to 10+ if the child is quick to grasp strategy games. This is strictly a two-player game, making it ideal for intimate, head-to-head competitions.

14. Quixx

My mom introduced us to Quixx this summer, and it instantly became one of my top choices for a quick, engaging game with the kids before bedtime. It doesn’t take long to play and is incredibly simple to teach – a major plus, as I get a nervous twitch if a game takes longer than three and a half minutes to explain! It’s a simple dice game where players try to mark off as many numbers as possible in four colored rows on their score sheets. While it shares a superficial similarity to Yahtzee, the gameplay is entirely distinct and highly addictive. Just play it; it’s **super** fun and surprisingly strategic for such a straightforward concept.

AGES: 7+. Although the box suggests 8+, our 7-year-old plays perfectly fine. It’s a wonderful family game, accommodating 2-5 players (so we sometimes form partnerships). Quixx is equally great for kids learning basic probability and quick decision-making, or for teens and adults seeking a light, enjoyable filler game.

15. Hive

The best way to describe Hive is: it’s like chess, but with bugs! This abstract strategy game is a true gem, featuring beautiful, tactile pieces that resemble various insects, each with unique movement abilities. It does have a slight learning curve as you try to remember how each bug moves and where, but if you’re a fan of strategic games like chess, this one is an absolute winner. I played it at my parents’ house and absolutely loved it. It requires an investment of time to master, but it’s incredibly rewarding. Even though my brain felt a little fried after my first game, I immediately added it to my wish list. It’s a truly great, deep strategy game.

AGES: 8+. With the caveat that younger players will need a bit more time and practice to fully grasp the unique actions and movements of each insect. Hive is another excellent game primarily for teens and adults. It’s a two-player game, but it’s incredibly fun to play in a tournament-style format, pitting wits against various opponents.

16. Sushi Go!

I can’t help but giggle every time I spot Sushi Go! on our shelf. To truly appreciate this delightful card game, a fondness for sushi is definitely a plus! It’s a pick-and-pass card game where players try to grab the best combination of sushi dishes as they go by. The cards are passed around in a circle, just like a good old sushi conveyor belt, making the gameplay intuitive and easy to grasp. If you succeed, you get the satisfying privilege of “blowing up” your rival’s project using a clever little dynamite-shaped mechanism (that’s the official term, naturally!). Ooooh, this is a real goodie! Easy to learn and endlessly fun for the entire family. We’ve played variations of this game with Rook cards for years, but Grandpa Beck’s official version, rebranded as “Cover Your Assets,” adds fantastic strategic layers that elevate it. It’s a huge family favorite, often making an appearance on Sunday evenings before bed. The goal is to collect matching pairs of asset cards, but other players can “steal” your top assets, leading to exciting back-and-forth play and clever maneuvers. It’s simple enough for newcomers but offers depth for seasoned players.

AGES: 8+. This game is perfectly suited for just adults and teens, providing a competitive and engaging experience. However, it truly shines as a multi-generational family game, accommodating a wide range of ages. Our daughter Cam, though too young to play the full game, has proudly taken on the role of “official referee,” ensuring no one cheats!

19. Reverse Charades

For an active, get-up-and-move game that guarantees laughter, Reverse Charades simply can’t be beaten. My Aunt Marilyn and Uncle Dan own this game, and it’s consistently the first choice for my kids when we visit their house. We also played it at a family reunion last year with my parents, siblings, and their families, and the sheer hilarity was absolutely unforgettable.
