Friday Musings Holiday Detox and Life Updates

As the wheels turn on our recent six-hour road trip, I’m taking this opportunity, as I often do, to share a spontaneous collection of thoughts. These Friday Thoughts are a little brain dump, a snapshot of what’s been on my mind lately. I’d love nothing more than for you to join the conversation – please make sure to comment below with any and all of YOUR thoughts; it’s genuinely my favorite part of these posts!

Transforming Our Home: A Deep Dive into Our Latest Remodel Adventures

Embarking on a significant home renovation project right before the festive chaos of Christmas might sound like a questionable decision, and honestly, we’re still debating whether it was “fun” or simply an act of audacious optimism. When I say “we,” I mean Brian and I provided ample consultation and moral support, but the real magic was woven by Eric from Remedy Residential. Locals, if you’re looking for an incredible craftsman, he’s truly outstanding – though you’ll have to wait your turn until he finishes transforming my bathrooms!

Before and After Pantry Renovation

The Pantry Predicament: From Clutter to Culinary Heaven

Our remodeling journey began with a rather desperate situation: the kitchen pantry. What started as a “cute, little corner pantry” had, over time, staged a full-scale rebellion, its contents spilling out into every conceivable nook and cranny of our home. It wasn’t just an exaggeration; I was literally stashing food supplies, small appliances, and baking ingredients in the kids’ closets, balancing them precariously above the washing machine, and even hiding them under beds. The sheer volume of cooking essentials, coupled with a chronic lack of efficient storage, had turned meal prep into an elaborate scavenger hunt and made our kitchen feel constantly disorganized.

New Walk-in Pantry Construction

The solution we devised felt like an architectural stroke of genius: punching through the back wall of the existing pantry to incorporate a deeper section of our garage space. This ingenious transformation allowed us to create a spacious, highly functional walk-in pantry. And I have to confess, I don’t think I’ve ever experienced such profound excitement over a home improvement project in my entire life. The promise of organized shelves, clear countertops, and easy access to ingredients filled me with an almost giddy anticipation, envisioning a newfound sense of calm in our daily routine.

Spacious Walk-in Pantry Interior

The moment I stepped into the newly renovated space for the first time, I swear I heard a chorus of angels singing. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated bliss. Perhaps Eric, our wonderful contractor, was a little taken aback by my enthusiastic hug, a spontaneous expression of joy over the sight of perfectly crafted pantry shelving. But for me, this miraculous new walk-in pantry is more than just storage; it brings a whole new, elevated meaning to my oft-used coping skill of hiding in the pantry to secretly enjoy chocolate chips. Now, I can do it in spacious style, perhaps even with a bit of extra room for a comfortable armchair!

Brian’s Recovery Journey: A Grateful Update

Family enjoying time together

A heartfelt thank you goes out to EVERYONE who reached out – whether by email, comments, or follow-up questions – to ask about Brian’s recovery. Your kindness and concern, especially after this post where I shared some of our challenges, truly touched us. I’m thrilled to report that Brian is doing much, much better. He has returned to 100% capacity across all aspects of his life, from his professional responsibilities to his active involvement in home life and church service. While he’s still navigating some pretty constant congestion stemming from the surgery, and his snoring remains… well, let’s just say “distinctive” and a topic of ongoing family discussion, we are incredibly grateful for his significant improvement compared to those difficult months of October and November. The journey back to full health has been a long one, marked by perseverance and your unwavering support. Your care and thoughtful inquiries meant the world to us during that time, and for that, we offer our deepest thanks!

Embracing Positivity: Our New Year’s Intentions and Creative Pursuits

Are you one to set ambitious New Year’s resolutions? I tend to take a more moderate approach. While I always identify a few key areas for personal growth – spiritually, creatively, and personally – I make a conscious effort not to overcommit. My perfectionist tendencies find the feeling of failure particularly challenging, so I’ve learned that I thrive when I set the bar realistically, rather than impossibly high. This year, my primary personal goal emerged from some challenging emotional moments related to parenting and certain family dynamics we’ve been navigating. My biggest commitment for the year is to only say things that are positive.

Family moments and togetherness

The Power of Positive Parenting: Shifting Our Family Dynamic

This commitment to positivity, while applicable across all areas of my life, is most acutely focused on how I interact with my children. I believe with every fiber of my being that if I can consistently uphold this, it will profoundly change the trajectory of their lives and significantly enhance our home environment. Let me be clear: this doesn’t mean I’m no longer correcting behavior or implementing consequences when necessary. Instead, it’s about framing all those conversations positively, seeking to inspire cooperation and understanding rather than simply pointing out flaws. For example, instead of, “Seriously, you guys, can’t anyone get off the couch and help a little bit around here??” I now aim for, “It would really help if everyone could jump up and assist in the kitchen so we can get things cleaned up efficiently and have more time for fun!”

I won’t lie, this has been an incredibly demanding shift. There have been countless moments where I’ve nearly bitten off the side of my tongue to prevent myself from uttering something nagging or negative. Many evenings since the new year have concluded with a throbbing migraine, a testament to the immense mental effort required to filter out what I call “behavioral noise” – the minor annoyances and less-than-ideal behaviors – and to relentlessly focus on the positive, positive, positive. Yet, despite the challenges and the occasional headache, I am already witnessing what feel like miraculous improvements in the overall atmosphere and feeling of our home. This palpable shift fuels my determination to continue, even if the effort earns me a few more gray hairs. In conjunction with this, I’m also generously doling out more 8-second hugs to anyone related to me who will take them – and even those who initially resist! These longer hugs, scientifically shown to release oxytocin, are a simple yet powerful way to foster connection and deepen bonds, creating a more loving and secure family unit.

Nurturing Creativity: Conquering the Quilt Mountain

On the creative front, I’m making a firm commitment to finally complete the “Fancy Forest” quilt that I bravely (or perhaps foolishly) started a couple of years ago. Last year marked a significant milestone when I finished my first-ever, truly intricate pieced quilt – the “Book Nerd” quilt pictured below. I proudly gifted it to the kids as their traditional homemade Christmas present, though I wisely omitted any confession about the colorful language I may have uttered during its creation; quilting, it turns out, is a surprisingly challenging and sometimes frustrating endeavor! Their reactions on Christmas morning were absolutely priceless and incredibly rewarding, making all the painstaking hours worthwhile. So, here’s to hoping I not only survive but actually manage to finish this much more complex quilt project this year. Wish me luck in navigating the intricate patterns and countless stitches!

The Quest for the Perfect Cinnamon Roll: A Culinary Breakthrough

Would you believe me if I told you that over the recent holidays, I stumbled upon what I genuinely believe is the cinnamon roll recipe to end all cinnamon roll recipes? I understand the skepticism, especially considering my blog already features an abnormal number of “favorite” cinnamon rolls that I’ve passionately shared. However, I’m not entirely sure I’ll ever need to make another cinnamon roll recipe again after this discovery. These new cinnamon rolls are nothing short of phenomenal – they are noticeably lighter, incredibly fluffier, and, dare I say, more profoundly delicious than any I’ve ever had the pleasure of baking or tasting. This truly is a game-changer in the world of sweet, yeasted pastries, delivering a melt-in-your-mouth experience that is simply unparalleled. The recipe was graciously shared with me by an amazing home chef and baker friend from church, and I am bursting with excitement to potentially share it with you. So, tell me: are you thinking, “Stop already with another cinnamon roll recipe!” or are you eagerly exclaiming, “Bring it on! I need this in my life!” Your feedback will guide my next steps, but I truly believe this is a recipe worth shouting about!

Reflecting on the Holidays: Sweet Moments and Bittersweet Goodbyes

Overall, our Christmas and New Year’s celebrations were wonderful, despite a few lingering sickie germs making the rounds and attempting to dampen our festive spirits. And, of course, there was the inevitable general holiday and sugar overload – a phenomenon that can only be attributed to questionable parenting choices, such as committing to an epic Harry Potter movie marathon (among other indulgent activities!). Our family, being a proud clan of puzzling nerds, also managed to complete no less than four substantial jigsaw puzzles, providing countless hours of quiet, collaborative entertainment and a welcome break from screens. The kids are due back to school on Monday, marking the official end of their holiday break. We are currently on a last-minute family drive to Utah, heading there to celebrate the life of Brian’s beloved grandpa, who peacefully passed away on New Year’s Eve at the remarkable age of 91. It’s a bittersweet, yet also profoundly wonderful, way to bring closure to the holiday season, reminding us of the preciousness of life, the enduring strength of family connections, and the beauty found even in moments of farewell.

Winter scenery and holiday memories
