Celebrating 15 Years of Mel’s Kitchen Cafe: A Journey of Recipes, Community, and Growth
Fifteen years ago, fueled by youthful optimism and a passion for cooking, I embarked on a journey that would forever change my life. I started a humble recipe blog, initially known as mykitchencafe.blogspot.com. If the mention of that familiar blogspot address or either of my original logos below sparks a flicker of recognition, then you, dear reader, have been an incredible part of this journey for a very long time – and for that, you truly deserve a heartfelt award!

Just a few years into this adventure, My Kitchen Cafe gracefully transitioned from its blogspot beginnings to a dedicated dot com domain, becoming the Mel’s Kitchen Cafe you know today. While the domain settled, the logos underwent numerous transformations until I finally embraced professional design expertise. Each iteration, however, represented a step forward in this incredible evolution.

Reflecting on the past 15 years, it’s virtually impossible to encapsulate the myriad of changes that have unfolded – not just in my personal life, but also within the dynamic landscape of the internet and food blogging industry. When I first dipped my toes into the world of online recipe sharing, my family life was quite different, captured beautifully in snapshots like this:

Fast forward to today, and “life” has certainly expanded – in terms of the number of wonderful humans gracing our home, and, inevitably, in the number of wrinkles gracing my face! 😉 Each wrinkle, I like to think, tells a story of a cherished memory, a delicious meal shared, or perhaps a late night spent perfecting a recipe.

There are days when the sheer magnitude of sharing recipes in this digital space for a decade and a half feels astonishing. Fifteen years! It’s a significant chapter of my life, one that my children hardly remember life without. In fact, sometimes I find myself struggling to recall a time before “mom had a blog.”
A Humorous Family Anecdote: In the early days, when my kids were very young, I made a conscious effort to dedicate our daytime hours entirely to family activities, keeping computer time to an absolute minimum. However, the moment they were tucked into bed, I’d eagerly dive into my blogging to-do list. As children often do, mine would frequently emerge from their rooms, wander into my office, and request a drink, share a random bedtime-delaying story, or simply ask for a quick cuddle (despite having spent the entire day with me!). It was during this period that a teacher at church shared a rather amusing revelation: one of my children had proudly announced to the class that “my mom likes to play games on her computer every night after we go to bed!” I was torn between laughter and sheer mortification. It turned out, for years, my kids genuinely believed I was secretly hiding away to play computer games once they were asleep! We quickly held a family meeting to clarify that mom was actually working on her food blog, not indulging in solitaire until the wee hours. 😂 Despite our clarification, I suspect they continued to regale their friends, teachers, and their friends’ parents with tales of my late-night internet gaming habits for quite some time.
The Evolution of Food Photography: From Humble Snaps to Visual Feasts
Just as my kids’ shoe sizes have expanded and our menagerie of beloved animals has grown, so too has the visual quality of Mel’s Kitchen Cafe. Have you ever dared to venture into the archives and feast your eyes on some of my earliest food photographs? My goodness, the transformation is truly remarkable. It’s a testament to the journey, the learning, and the continuous effort to present these beloved recipes in the most appealing way possible. Talk about a dramatic “before and after” growth! 🤣 From simple snaps to more artistic compositions, the journey of food photography on this blog mirrors the growth of the entire enterprise.

Unwavering Core Values: My Motives Remain Constant
I could easily dedicate an entire separate blog post to detailing the seismic shifts that have occurred in the food blogging world over the last 15 years, distinct from the changes in my personal family life. What began as a nascent online community has blossomed into a sophisticated, highly competitive industry. Over the years, the digital realm of food blogging has transitioned from a simple, personal endeavor to something far more strategic and business-oriented.
It often feels less relatable and, at times, more robotic.
Less carefree and certainly more calculated.
This isn’t to say these changes are inherently negative; they are simply different. When I first launched my blog, my sole intention was to share cherished recipes with my mom and sisters, who lived far away. I never harbored aspirations of becoming a “full-time” blogger. In fact, I distinctly remember feeling utterly freaked out a few months after I started posting recipes when I received a comment from a complete stranger, expressing how much they enjoyed a dish they’d made. My initial, slightly irrational thought was that an internet stalker was on the prowl, coming after my children!
As it turns out, that very first blog reader was a perfectly kind, normal human being who, to this day, remains a loyal follower of my blog (a big hello, Kim!). Since then, millions of wonderful readers have joined her, transforming this space into a vibrant community.
Years ago, I penned a heartfelt blog post titled “This is Why I Blog”. What’s truly remarkable is that I could honestly repost that article word for word today, as my core philosophies and reasons for blogging have remained steadfast. If you haven’t had the chance to read that post, I wholeheartedly encourage you to do so. It offers a genuine glimpse into my perspective, illuminating why I approach blogging in the way that I do.
While the methodologies and technological aspects of blogging have evolved infinitely over these past years, my fundamental motives have not wavered. Just as when I began sharing recipes online in late 2007, my driving purpose remains precisely the same: to meticulously share my absolute favorite, tried-and-true recipes with the world, fostering connections through the universal language of food. These are the recipes that have stood the test of time in my own kitchen, brought joy to my family, and that I genuinely believe will enrich yours.

What started as a simple hobby, a creative outlet to connect with family, has organically grown into a significant part of my life. Today, Mel’s Kitchen Cafe is an intricate blend of both a beloved hobby and a demanding full-time job. I never would have imagined, 15 years ago, that a readership of what felt like just five people would expand into millions. This tremendous growth has been an awesome opportunity and an undeniable blessing for me and my family, shaping my daily life in profound ways.

Transparency on Income and Revenue: How Mel’s Kitchen Cafe Sustains Itself
Discussions about money can sometimes feel a bit awkward, and heaven knows, I never want things to feel weird between us! However, over the years, many readers have expressed curiosity about whether Mel’s Kitchen Cafe actually generates income. The straightforward answer is, yes, it does! But this wasn’t always the case, and the journey to financial sustainability has been a learning curve.
For the initial several years of blogging, my income was approximately zero dollars. It was purely a labor of love. Around 2010, I tentatively began integrating display advertisements onto my website. My first foray was directly with Google AdSense, followed by a partnership with Foodbuzz through Federated Media, a company that is long since outdated in the rapidly evolving ad tech world. I vividly recall literally falling over with excitement one particular month when I received a check for $125. It felt unbelievable to be compensated even that modest amount for sharing recipes I so genuinely loved!
As the blog grew and the industry matured, I transitioned to different ad networks, first with AdThrive, and then making the beneficial switch to Mediavine in 2016, where I’ve been happily partnered ever since. A very simplistic way to describe how sophisticated ad networks like Mediavine operate is this: they work directly with a vast array of ad exchanges and companies to efficiently service and display all the advertisements you see across my website. Crucially, they handle all the complex ad technology, optimization, and customer acquisition, freeing me to focus on creating delicious content without getting bogged down in ad sales.
My compensation is based on a revenue split model. This means I don’t directly pay Mediavine for their extensive work in managing the ads; instead, Mediavine and I share the revenue generated from the ads displayed on my site. While I can specify certain ad categories I prefer to avoid, the system isn’t always entirely perfect. This is why you might occasionally encounter a questionable ad, perhaps an alcohol advertisement, even if I have explicitly disabled such categories in my ad settings. Please, always feel empowered to report those ads! You can easily do so by clicking on the Mediavine logo, usually found in the lower right-hand corner of the ad, and selecting “report ad” (as illustrated in the screenshot below).

Through consistent hard work, steadily increasing website traffic, and strategic adjustments to my advertising structure, my blog has grown significantly. It now proudly provides a full-time income for me and my family, a profound blessing that allows me to pursue my passion professionally.
My income streams primarily include: the display advertisements you see integrated throughout the blog, earnings from Amazon affiliate links, and L’Chef affiliate links, particularly when Bosch mixers are on sale. I fully understand that ads can, at times, be an annoyance. It’s precisely because of this awareness that I deliberately choose to run only about half of the available ads offered through my ad network. It’s a balance I strive to maintain. However, it’s crucial to recognize that these advertisements serve an essential purpose: they directly help cover the significant costs associated with running and hosting a professional website, they enable me to pay my valuable employees and contractors for their indispensable work, and they provide fair compensation for my own dedicated time and effort invested in the blog. This allows Mel’s Kitchen Cafe to continue offering high-quality, free content to millions of readers.
The Backbone of Mel’s Kitchen Cafe: My Incredible Team
I am incredibly blessed to have my sister, Emily, as my dedicated virtual assistant! She joined me in 2013, and I can honestly say she is an absolute lifesaver. Emily manages a vast array of crucial tasks behind the scenes: she schedules posts to Facebook, handles numerous incoming emails, meticulously updates recipes and categories across the blog, and so much more. Her meticulous work ensures the smooth operation of Mel’s Kitchen Cafe, allowing it to function efficiently and reach a wider audience.
Emily’s invaluable assistance allows me the essential time and mental space to concentrate on what I love most and what truly drives the blog’s content: intensive recipe testing, capturing all the vibrant food photographs, crafting engaging blog posts, thoughtfully responding to comments, interacting with our wonderful community on Instagram, occasionally indulging in a much-needed nap, and most importantly, maintaining the authentic, personal voice that defines this blog and resonates with you all.

And since I seem to be deep in the middle of what feels a lot like an acceptance speech (it’s starting to sound like one, haha!), I would be truly remiss if I didn’t extend a massive, heartfelt shoutout to my faithful partner, my best friend, and the most dedicated unpaid assistant around: my husband, Brian. From the very inception of this blog, Brian has been my biggest champion and unwavering supporter. As the resident taste tester – yes, all those tempting pictures on my blog with just one perfect bite taken out? You can thank Brian for that diligent effort! – he consistently offers boundless support, profound compassion, vital brain gasoline for brainstorming, and endlessly patient listening ears. His steadfast encouragement is what truly keeps me and this blog putting one foot in front of the other, day after day.

Navigating the Numbers Game: Understanding Blog Traffic and Our Global Community
The year 2020 proved to be an extraordinary period for internet traffic across the board. Due to the global pandemic shutdowns and a significant surge in at-home cooking, Mel’s Kitchen Cafe experienced record-high monthly visits, soaring to nearly 10 million per month! While that peak was certainly thrilling, traffic has since gradually returned to more typical levels, and in some metrics, it’s actually a bit less than it was a few years ago. This ebb and flow is a natural part of the online world, and it underscores the dynamic nature of digital engagement.
The interesting thing is, I rarely find myself checking my stats. I genuinely can’t tell you, month-to-month, the precise number of visitors I’m getting, or whether that number is currently waxing or waning. I’ve made a conscious choice to adopt this approach because the “numbers game” – whether it relates to website traffic or social media metrics – can be incredibly debilitating and distracting. By choosing not to obsess over every fluctuation, I find I can stay better focused on my overarching intentions for this blog: sharing great recipes and connecting with you all authentically. Of course, I monitor and check things out periodically to ensure everything is running smoothly, but I make an effort not to dwell on the minutiae of the data.
However, for the specific purpose of celebrating this 15-year milestone and for a bit of fun, I did make a special effort to check in and see where our wonderful visitors are checking in from! It’s always fascinating to see the global reach of our shared love for food.

Our global community spans far and wide, with the following top countries represented:
- United States: 81.38%
- Canada: 8.35%
- United Kingdom: 2.53%
- Australia: 1.35%
- South Africa: .56%
- New Zealand: .36%
- Philippines: .35%
- India: .33%
- Germany: .29%
It’s truly humbling to see Mel’s Kitchen Cafe reaching so many kitchens across the globe, bringing people together through the shared joy of cooking and eating.
Blogging My Way: Authenticity Over Pure Strategy
In the vast and ever-expanding world of food blogging, there are countless immensely savvy and strategic creators. Many immerse themselves in rigorous keyword research, meticulously crafting their recipe posts to align perfectly with what Google’s algorithms favor, all with the ultimate goal of securing top positions in search results. These ambitious bloggers actively network with major companies and with each other, steadily growing impressive virtual empires. They publish cookbooks, produce extensive video content, and develop a wide range of branded products, often achieving incredible business success. It’s truly amazing to observe and witness their dedication and accomplishments; I genuinely admire their entrepreneurial spirit!
My own approach, however, likely comes as no surprise to my long-time readers. It’s distinctly more aligned with a “homebody,” naturalistic, “girl-next-door” philosophy. What this essentially means is: I don’t engage in extensive networking, I don’t pore over keyword research with intense scrutiny, and I purposefully steer clear of sponsored posts. My process is far more organic and driven by genuine culinary excitement.
It typically unfolds like this: I create a new recipe. If it’s a success, I’ll often squeal in pure delight. I then “gently persuade” my family to taste it and provide their honest feedback. If needed, I’ll make the recipe again, refining and perfecting. And very likely, I’ll make it yet again to ensure it’s absolutely perfect. Only then do I confidently post it for all of you, because if I didn’t share such a wonderful creation, I honestly wouldn’t be able to sleep at night!

This authentic approach isn’t to imply that I don’t work incredibly hard at this endeavor. I absolutely do! Blogging, especially food blogging, involves a tremendous amount of work – certainly far more than simply capturing a pretty picture of food and casually uploading it online. There’s recipe development, testing, writing, photography, editing, website maintenance, community engagement, and so much more that happens behind the scenes.
I do strategically set priorities for certain projects, such as growing my email subscriber list, and I’ve always placed a high emphasis on staying current with fundamental SEO principles and essential technology updates that keep the site running smoothly. However, at my core, I remain an old-school blogger whose primary aspiration is to maintain a genuine space where I can share my most beloved recipes with the world, connecting with real people through the joy of food. This commitment to authenticity means that, at times, I consciously choose to turn a blind eye to some “best practices” or conventional industry wisdom, opting instead to follow my own path.
I don’t do this out of ignorance or disregard; it’s genuinely a survival skill, a deliberate choice to preserve my mental health and ensure that I can continue blogging with passion and joy for the long haul. For me, this space, Mel’s Kitchen Cafe, is about so much more than mere numbers, stats, financial metrics, or fleeting notoriety. It is, at its heart, about fostering true human connection and sharing truly good things – delicious, comforting recipes – with each and every one of you.
A Glimpse Into My World: A Day in the Life of a Food Blogger
Over the years, my daily schedule has naturally shifted and adapted to the changing rhythms of my family life. Now that all of my children are in school full-time – with one having already graduated high school, a truly surreal milestone! – I’ve made a concerted effort to complete the bulk of my blogging work, particularly the computer-intensive tasks, during the daylight hours. This allows me to avoid staying up super late into the night just to conquer my ever-present to-do list.
While I don’t adhere to rigid, fixed “work hours,” my schedule organically settles into a pattern where approximately two full days a week are dedicated to the computer-based aspects of blogging. This involves writing and publishing engaging blog posts, diligently answering the many wonderful comments and emails I receive, coordinating various projects with my sister-VA, and tackling other essential tech-related tasks that keep the website running smoothly and efficiently.
My mornings typically begin after I’ve seen my kids off to school. I then attend to our farm animals, engage in scripture study, take time to write in my journal, fit in some exercise, and (on particularly productive days!) manage to squeeze in a shower. After these personal and household routines, I dive wholeheartedly into blog work, generally from about 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with various laundry cycles and other household or farm chores interspersed throughout the day. It’s a constant juggle, but one I’ve learned to navigate with a certain rhythm.

In addition to the computer-focused days, I dedicate another day or two each week to bustling around the kitchen. This time is crucial for recipe testing and, of course, capturing all the enticing photographs. Since I rely exclusively on natural light for my photography, during the winter months, this means I have a strict deadline to complete my photo shoots before 4 p.m., often racing against the dwindling daylight. This adds an interesting seasonal challenge to my workflow.
I typically develop and make about 5-6 new recipes every single week. Sometimes these are purely for fun, a creative exploration in the kitchen. Other times, they are for intensive re-testing (again and again!) and/or for capturing fresh, high-quality photos for upcoming posts. I know, I know – some might suggest I need to get a life or find more diverse hobbies, but I truly can’t help it! My passion for food and the joy of creating new recipes are deeply ingrained within me, making this a labor of love.

My kids consistently have Fridays off from school, so I make a conscious effort to fit all my core blogging work into Monday through Thursday. However, inevitably, there are always one or two evenings when work spills over, and you’ll find me in my office, diligently working from 8 to around 11 p.m. It’s a dynamic schedule, but one that offers incredible flexibility.
I don’t shy away from acknowledging that I work from home, or that this blog constitutes a full-time job. But what I truly, deeply consider a serious blessing is that this particular job, my blog, allows me the incredible autonomy to set my own hours and schedule. While it undeniably requires significant hours and unwavering effort, this flexibility is invaluable. It enables me to volunteer in my daughter’s classroom, actively participate in church and community service (currently, I’m contributing to a refugee organization, which has been an incredibly life-altering and profoundly rewarding experience), run errands precisely when needed, take a spontaneous break from everything to help one of my kids or tackle a house project, or even just aimlessly waste a few minutes on the internet searching for something delightfully obscure, like watermelon carving knives. This balance is truly what makes it all worthwhile.
Reflecting on the Journey: More Than Just Recipes
While the primary focus of Mel’s Kitchen Cafe has always been on sharing truly exceptional, tried-and-true recipes, this space has organically evolved over the years to encompass much more. Beyond the culinary delights, I’ve also had the pleasure of sharing thoughtful gift guides, engaging Friday Thoughts posts (which, for long-time readers, used to be our beloved Snapshot Saturdays!), and authentic glimpses into my real life – the highs, the lows, and everything in between. It’s important to me that this blog reflects a genuine human experience.
At the end of each day, I am a very average, real human being navigating a life that comes with its fair share of both soaring highs and challenging lows. And I don’t believe in doing a great job of pretending that those things don’t exist. My personal motto, and something I strive to embody here, is simple: Normalize real life. Embrace the imperfections, celebrate the everyday, and find joy in the genuine moments. 🙂

I genuinely have no clear idea how much longer I’ll continue to blog. If you were to ask me on some days, my answer would be an enthusiastic “forever!” On other days, when the challenges feel particularly heavy, the answer might be more akin to “Um, ask me tomorrow – I may have pulled the plug on the blog by then.”
The honest truth is, even with my laid-back, authentic style, blogging is undeniably hard work. Something is always happening (or, more often, breaking!) behind the scenes, and the amount of management required for a successful blog extends far beyond simply capturing delicious pictures of food and developing exciting new recipes. There are technical issues, content planning, community management, and constant updates to navigate.
There are moments when I get tired, and yes, I certainly experience burnout. But the fundamental reason I always, always find myself sitting back at my computer, even at midnight – and emphatically NOT playing solitaire 😉 – is because of all of you, my incredible readers.
Seriously. It’s truly because of you.
The Heart of Mel’s Kitchen Cafe: Our Indispensable Community
If it weren’t for the genuine human connections I’ve had the immense privilege of making with you over these past 15 years; if it weren’t for the thoughtful comments you consistently leave, the heartwarming stories and unique experiences you generously share, the precious notes that tell me how a particular recipe has impacted your family or brought a positive change to someone’s life, for the hilarious anecdotes that bring a smile to my face, and even the heartbreaking life experiences you trust me enough to share… if it weren’t for all of that, I would have likely been long gone from this online space. It is your presence, your engagement, and your shared humanity that breathes life into this blog.
I often tell my family that it’s perfectly fine that I don’t leave my house much, because I have millions of wonderful friends online. And, okay, I fully realize that sounds completely weird, and if my own children ever echoed that sentiment back to me, I’d definitely be looking into professional help for them! But, beyond the humor, it’s also profoundly true. So, thank you. Thank you for sticking around, for being my virtual friends, and for making this a space that I genuinely want to return to day after day, year after year. Your support and connection are my greatest motivators.
Love your guts. 😘
A special and heartfelt shoutout of thanks also goes out to every single one of you who takes the time to leave comments, ratings, and reviews on recipes after you’ve made them. This makes such a monumental difference! It’s not only incredibly encouraging and helpful for me, but it’s also an invaluable resource for other readers who scroll through comments to gather ideas, variations, and helpful suggestions when they are planning to make a recipe themselves. Your contributions enrich the entire community. Thank you, truly, for taking the extra step to leave your comments, reviews, and ratings!
Looking Ahead: Exciting Plans for Mel’s Kitchen Cafe’s Future
As we embark on the next chapter of Mel’s Kitchen Cafe, you can absolutely count on a continuous stream of the very best, meticulously tested new recipes to keep popping up here! I have some truly exciting culinary creations currently in the works, and I cannot wait to share them with you. My personal goal for 2023 and beyond is to consistently deliver 4-5 impeccably tested, fantastic recipes each month, ensuring a steady flow of delicious inspiration for your kitchen.

In addition to the constant flow of fresh recipes, I’m diligently planning several key initiatives:
- Comprehensive Recipe Updates: A major focus will be on providing extensive updates to many of the classic recipes that have been cherished on this blog for over a decade. This won’t involve changing the core recipe itself, but rather refreshing photos, clarifying recipe notes, adding helpful tips, and enhancing their overall presentation to meet current standards.
- Expanded Content Projects: I envision some exciting additional content projects that will likely necessitate hiring another assistant to specifically help with marketing strategies and development initiatives, expanding our reach and engagement.
- Website Enhancements: Ongoing site updates and changes are planned to ensure the website remains sleek, savvy, and even more user-friendly and SEO-friendly, providing an optimal experience for all visitors.
- Continued Friday Thoughts: I’ll be continuing with our beloved Friday Thoughts posts now and then, offering personal reflections and snippets of life beyond the kitchen.
- Future Innovations: And, of course, there are always a few other innovative ideas swirling around in my brain, waiting for the right moment to come to fruition!
I often receive questions about whether I plan to write a cookbook. The truth is, I do have a cookbook project started on my computer – complete with some drafted content, a wealth of ideas, and a clear vision. However, every time I come close to signing a publishing contract or seriously pursuing the self-publishing (or hybrid) route, I find myself unable to fully commit. The prospect feels inherently stressful and, for some reason, just not quite right at this moment. I believe my biggest hangup stems from the fact that my absolute first priority is to consistently publish a wide range of amazing, high-quality content on my blog. I genuinely don’t think I can effectively manage the demanding process of creating a cookbook and simultaneously maintain the quality and consistency of the blog without compromising one or the other. Additionally, I sometimes question whether I truly have something unique and novel to offer the already saturated cookbook world that hasn’t been done countless times before. So, for now, we’ll have to wait and see! As they say, never say never, but my focus remains firmly on the blog.

My hope is that for many of you, these insights offer a genuine connection beyond the recipes.

I’m simply so grateful for each and every one of you – for the good humans you are, for the efforts you make in your own lives, and for the affirmations you’ve allowed me to feel, reinforcing that this blog is indeed “more than just a blog.” I’m just very grateful to be here, sharing this journey with all of you, day in and day out.

To answer a few common questions that have been coming through in the comments:
- Where do you find ideas for new recipes? I honestly have so many recipe ideas constantly swirling around in my head that it’s a miracle I ever manage to get to sleep! I’m always anxious to share all of them with you. My inspiration comes from various sources: I find a tremendous amount of creativity and innovation in recipes that you, my readers, generously share with me (I absolutely LOVE GETTING NEW RECIPES FROM YOU SO MUCH – thank you for sending them!). I also draw inspiration from a few trusted recipe magazines and, of course, social media platforms. However, a significant portion of my recipe inspiration simply stems from my brain constantly thinking about food and envisioning exciting new recipe mashups I’m eager to create and perfect.
- How many times do you test a new recipe before posting it? I test every new recipe at least twice to ensure consistency and deliciousness. For baking recipes, which require a bit more precision, it’s usually an average of 3-4 times, with some particularly stubborn recipes sometimes requiring a few more testing sessions until they’re absolutely perfect and ready for you.
- How many of your recipes are original creations versus modifications from other sources? There’s a healthy mix of both on the blog! Although, in today’s vast culinary landscape, I would submit that there’s probably no such thing as a truly “original” recipe anymore, given how many recipes already exist “out there.” I always make it a point to clearly cite a recipe source if I’ve used a recipe as significant inspiration or modified it substantially. However, there are many recipes I’ve genuinely come up with entirely on my own, born from all those ideas swirling around my head, and a good number are beloved family recipes from my own childhood, adapted and shared.
- How adventurous are your kids when it comes to eating? My children generally eat everything I make. While they don’t always “love, love” certain ingredients (I have a dedicated tomato hater, a mushroom hater, and a bean hater among them; they power through it with good grace!), they will certainly eat it. I have two kids who are incredibly adventurous, always eager to try new things, and will eat literally anything. These are the ones who, when we’re at restaurants, will order something unusual and fun, and enthusiastically dig into sushi with Brian and me. The other three, bless their hearts, typically go straight for the classic mac and cheese and chicken nuggets. 🙂 It’s a fun balance in our family kitchen!
